What veggies will grow in the winter

We live in Northern Cali so it doesnt get too cold (at least not like the midwest where I grew up) in the winter. Is there anything I can plant that will grow in the winter(or fall).Maybe even something somewhat small that I can do in a pot inside? Also anything we plant needs to be in apot since we have no yard and the deer eat anything. I have to put all pots on our deck.

You might want to check out Four Season Harvest.

It really depends on your location for growing. I tried growing cold weather plants 2 years ago (also N. CA), I believe, and discovered my back yard just does not get enough sunlight during the winter. If I had the pots on my roof, they probably would have been fine, though. During the summer my back porch gets full sunlight and the tomatoes love it, but during the winter with the polar tilt, it's not nearly enough.

That being said, any of your cruciferous vegetables should work in our mild weather - cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower... many of your greens - kale, chard, bok choi, spinach, etc. From my CSA I also get carrots, radishes, turnips, kohlrabi, lettuce and a few herbs (parsley, cilantro). They also have alliums during the winter, along with winter harvest potatoes - although I believe both have to be planted in the spring for that. You could even probably get beets, if you planted them early enough.
