horrible c section infection

Thread Starter
Its been a rough three weeks after having Kayla. Kayla was finally released from the NICU 10 days after I had her. If you do not remember I was in labor for over 40 hours with pitocin and not dilating. The entire week she was in NICU I had a very high fever of 103.5. Went back to Dr said it was a kidney infection. Took my antibiotics and nothing helped. Two days after her release I finally went to a different hospital and was admitted. My stomach (yes this is gross) pretty much just broke open, not the incision but above my belly button. My skin just ripped apart and i was gushing fluid. I developed gangrene, and had nasty lesions just pouring fluid. I spent close to two weeks in ICU and had two more surgeries to get the infection out. I had 4 infections strep b, staph, and two others I can not pronounce. The last surgery I ended up having a wound vac. Which is a sponge attached to a tube that drains my infection. I now have to incisions one is about 8 inches long and the other only about 4, both attached to these sponges and tubes. I have a pick line that I hook up to IVS twice a day. I have a visiting nurse come 3 times a week to change my sponges and tubes, let me just say that is the most painful thing ever.

Now I know why people avoid c sections at all costs. Its a very rare thing that happened to me. Everyone is telling me to sue the Dr that made me labor so long to cause the infection. My incision was perfect, it was all internal affecting most of my organs. I don't even care about the law suit I just want to get back to normal. I hate having tubes and a machine I have to take with me where ever I go. It is so hard taking care of a newborn being in so much pain and being attached to machines and IVS.

Sorry for my complaining I just had to get this out. It has been very rough dealing with all this. I am very happy Kayla is healthy, and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat if I had to.

I am glad everyone is doing well, I missed reading all the updates and wondered how everyone was while I was in ICU. Take care and thanks for reading

Complaining? My goodness, what you've gone through is torture. By far, your story is the toughest I've ever heard. No one imagines having a baby and giving birth to entail all you've gone through. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Wow. Talk about torturous!

And for those morons who are telling you to sue the doctor for letting you labor for so long... long labors do not lead to gangrene, but it is not an unheard of complication after cesarean. Suing the doctor for letting you labor is one of the reasons why so many doctors are so eager to cut.

Oh my goodness!! You poor thing! Something similar happened to one of my doulas after her first birth (c/s) which is what turned her to home birth.

It's important to remember that it wasn't labor that caused this, it most likely is a hospital acquired infection, which is one reason why so many homebirthers avoid HOSPITALS at all costs, not just c-sections. Germs like that are rampant in hospitals, and although it's rare, what's happening to you has happened many times before.

You poor thing!!!

You've been through so much since the beginning of this pregnancy, more than any woman should have to go through, and now this?? Oh, I want to come take care of you so badly!!!!! And that little Angel Kayla...I just want to nurse her for you while you recover!

Hang in there, rest up, let those meds do their work. My son had a PICC line last year, and I remember hooking him up to the IV pump daily. It was a hassle, but better to have him at home rather than in the hospital where he could have gotten worse infections.

OMG, that sounds like an awful infection. That's one reason why hospitals scare me, stories of hospital-acquired infections seem all too common these days. A hospital is not the sterile place they would have you believe... I'm sorry you are going through all of this now, and I hope you're back to healthy and normal very soon.

I am so sorry that you had to go through such a terrible, traumatic experience surrounding your labor and post partum. I agree with the pp's who are afraid of hospitals for that same reason...I am sending good healing vibes your way. Rest up and enjoy your precious Kayla. I hope you have lots of help and support around you!

Oh, you poor mama! Do you have anyone to help you with baby and daily things you need? I am praying you do. I have never heard of such a horrible "after" birthing story but I am sure that it is kept quiet for the benefit of "patients". We need women like you to let us know of things like that and that they can happen. I feel terrible about complaining like I have with this pregnancy when it can be much, much worse. Poor sweetie. Sending healing prayers and vibes and that baby will take it easy on you....Hugs!
