carrier for 12+ month old while pregnant

Thread Starter
i think i need a back carrier to use as my belly grows. i walk at least 3 miles every day pushing 3yo and carrying 1yo in moby. but as i get bigger, not due till may, i think i need to move him to my back. i don't feel comfortable with ds on my back in moby, it always feels like hes going to fall out if he leans back, even though dh has helped me put it on properly and pulled on the baby to show me he isnt going anywhere, i still always walked hunched over a little bit. so i was thinking of getting a ergo because they look simple and comfortable to use with baby on back. also considered mai tai but am unsure of the comfoet for extended use. we hike a lot and i prefer the moby over the baby bjorn sport for that, i think the weight is distributed better and i can nurse without stopping. any ideas? i wish i could test out carries before buying them, or can i?

also is there a carrier i can use with newborn in front and bigger baby on back? maybe i should start a new thread for that.

Carrier When Pregnant

With our first DD (when I was pregnant with our second), I only managed to front carry her until I was about six months along.

This time I've been using a Beco Butterfly with DS in a back carry for most of my pregnancy. In the beginning, I wore the waist belt under my bump. Around five or six months I switched to wearing the waist belt above my bump.

With the belt below my belly the Beco did put more strain on my shoulders than it would have otherwise. With the belt about my belly it doesn't fit quite right. The ergo has a shorter body than the Beco... but I'm torn as to whether that would be better or worse.

I'm eight months along now and have pretty much stopped wearing DS. It's just too tiring to carry an extra 24 pounds around no matter how I strap it to my body! DS is 16 months and either goes in the stroller or DH carries him.

I wraps and I think they're going to be the best for weight distribution and comfort any day.

You just need to switch from a stretchy to a woven wrap (like storchenwiege, didymos, neobulle, a million others). Woven wraps are more secure in a back carry because they don't (duh) stretch. They are also more supportive for a baby that age anyway, so you should be more comfortable in ANY position than with a stretchy wrap.

Wraps are great for wearing two babies also. You can wear your little one in the Moby on your front, and then put the one year old in a rucksack on your back with the woven. You put the rucksack on top of the Moby, so you can let your one year old down without disturbing the baby. You can then pop the baby in and out of the Moby without taking the one year old down. Perfect!

Tie the rucksack tibetan (across your chest) or just tie it below or above your bump--whichever is comfy for you. The rucksack straps will also leave your boobs clear for what they're meant for (breastfeeding).

IMO, a wrap will be more comfy than anything with straps, or any one shoulder carrier. Good luck!

I loved my mei tai back carry while pregnant... my LO was under a year but a big baby... he hit 20 lbs at five months and just kept going.

I felt the weight was much more manageable on the back, and actually liked how it kind of balanced out my giant pregnant belly. With the mei tai I could tie the straps above my belly and still be comfortable babywearing up until the end. My LO learned to walk about a week before his sister was born, and so the mei tai got a LOT of use during my pregnancy.
