BPP and NST today....41+2 and counting....

My midwife referred me to the maternal/fetal medicine doc for a BPP and NST today.

The baby is fine, I am fine. The BPP is basically an ultrasound checking fluid levels, lung function, heart beat, etc. Everything looked good. We could see the baby swallowing and practicing breathing. The heartbeat was fine. He also measured the blood flow through the cord, which was fine.

Then I had an NST which again measures heartbeat and contractions. Heartbeat was 130-160 the whole time and basically no contractions going on.

The doc estimates baby to be 9lb 4oz and basically looked at me and said "you need to have this baby by 42 weeks." That totally freaked me out.

On the way home I called my midwife and told her I was freaking. She assured me that weight measurements can be WAY off and told me stories of other moms that he scared who went on to deliver smaller babies then he said they would. Whew.

The plan is to wait out the weekend, then call on Monday for another BPP/NST on Tues. I'll also see my MW on Tues at which time she'll strip my membranes. She is going to call her back up OB on Monday to consult and we'll probably schedule induction for Thurs or Friday (I'll be 42 weeks on Weds), which would mean losing my homebirth.

So now the pressure is on to deliver this weekend, folks. Send all the labor vibes you can spare!!!!

yikes i'm sorry. but the good news is baby is OK. they can't force you to induce. mary sommers the MW who i took the birth class with said she regularly had her babies at 44 weeks. maybe baby isn't ready. what are your other options? i mean this same lady told me after 42 w that all they will do is make you get BPP and tests like every three days. not the most fun but it beats an induction if your baby isn't ready. good luck Deb i hope this baby comes very, very soon. :

Not in your DDC but saw this on new posts and just wanted to mention that I don't know how the laws are in your state but here where I live at 42 weeks we have to transfer care to an OB....no if's and's or buts.....but I just wanted to mention a couple of safe "natural induction" techniques that are safe and won't work if baby isn't ready anyways....I am sure someone else will mention these as well...

Reflexology (which worked for me with ds and like you I was showing NO signs whatsoever of impending labor...I wasn't even effaced or dilated)

Acupressure...

Acupuncture....(which worked for my SIL)

I don't know what your are comfortable with but these were much better in my book than a medical induction.

Also FWIW my ds came at exactly 41 weeks and was 10+lbs....after my m/w estimated him earlier that week at 8 1/2 lbs....granted that was only by palpating my tummy but I don't think u/s this late in the game can be any better at guesstimating size.

I live in IL, the most MW unfriendly state ever, so if I don't have this baby soon it's an OB at the hospital for me. I feel like a ticking time bomb.

We can enjoy the 'baby now or else' tension together. Sorry you're experiencing this! I've done the NST, and the BPP is on Monday, it's looking questionable in terms of induction though, so I'm fervently hoping baby settles into a great position and I go into labor naturally this weekend, the OBs want to section next week. :/

I just checked my insurance re: back-up OB. She is covered in-network, but only one of her two hospitals are. Good think I checked otherwise we would have gone to the wrong one and been out even more money!

Get Acupuncture ASAP. Even if it does not work right away you yourself or your partner can work on the points.

I've done everything on the list---walking, sex, EPO, acupuncture, massage, accupressure, enema. Only thing left is homeopathics and castor oil.

My husband just recently changed to oil in the car. I have been joking with him and anyone else who would listen as MIL keeps telling me to drink castor oil and I am just now at my LMP due date as of 9-11. (Doctors say U/S at 8 weeks is more accurate? so 9-17) Anyway...I asked my husband what kind of oil he bought and he said Castoroil. I said "See, I told you it was for the car and not to drink". Can anyone tell me what Castor oil for labor is and where you would even attempt to find that? And....if it is like mineral oil or something, why not just use that or cooking oil? Me, personally, I have to take a laxitive every two days anyway (now that the OB's say I can) and I have had no signs of labor, contractions, or anything good...Don't think that all that stuff that is told to women about it inducing works until baby says "here I come"....

Deb - Stripping membranes finally did it for me at 42+2, so here's hoping that's the trick for you.



Castor oil is available in the pharmacy section of most any store. Just ask pharmacy where you can find it. I don't know what it's extracted from, but yeah, it's like mineral oil.

It's on the bottom shelf next to the enemas at WalMart.
