He was born at 8:03 AM, during a most unplanned homebirth, delivered by Daddy on the kitchen floor, in the caul!
I did not think I was in labor until 6:30 am, and assumed I still had a long way to go. My contractions had been irregular since 11:00 pm, and although they were painful, I kept thinking of my experiences with my first labor. It did not seem as painful as those "labor" contractions. I "checked out" mentally and could not really verbally communicate. I guess we should have known it was close at that point. I woke DH up to time contractions at 1:00 AM, and they were still irregular, some lasting a minute long, some 30 seconds, some in between. At 2, I decided to go downstairs and hang out where I could pace around and not worry about waking DH and DS. The contractions kept happening, and though they were uncomfortable, they were not overtly painful. During quite a few of them, I kept feeling like I had to poop. That was really strange. The contractions were still really irregular. Some 10 min. apart, some less. Strangely, after a contraction I would fall asleep, sometimes for 3 minutes or longer depending, and wake up for the next contraction. I found it unbearable to lay or sit down, and would pace around during the contractions. At 6 AM, I woke DH again to tell him there was something going on, and there was no way he'd be able to go to work that day. The contractions were getting stronger, and I was more and more out in space, not thinking clearly. DH picked up some of our birth class literature, and was trying to figure out where I was at. It seemed I was in transition!!! I lost my mucous plug during a contraction, and then with subsequent contractions I managed to pour mucous all over the house! So, DH got on the phone with our MW, and was relaying what was occurring. She wanted us to get over to the birth center asap, but I absolutely refused- it's 40 minutes away from our house, and there was no way I could sit in a car for any length of time, much less 40 minutes. I told DH we were going to call 911 and go to the closest hospital, which is a city hospital with a reputation of not being the nicest thing around. DH did not like the idea of this, and tried convincing me to stick it out for the BC. I said no way. All the while the contractions changed, and seemed to go on endlessly, not in waves anymore. And then I needed to push. There was nothing in me that could stop the need to push. And then i felt him move, and standing in my kitchen, his head was visibly coming out! DH called 911- we so did not expect a HB! DH gathered couch cushions, blankets, towels in accordance with the 911 operator. They insisted I lay down, and as soon as I did, Sebastian Wesley slid right out of me, without a push, into his Daddy's hands! My water never broke, and DH peeled the amniotic sac from his face, and he said it seemed to disintegrate into nothing. Our baby boy began crying a gentle cry, and Daddy put him up on my chest and covered him with a towel. Our 3 year old DS was witness to everything. He calmly watched from behind DH, and said during the delivery "just breathe, mommy, just breathe!" Then the paramedics walked in to the scene and for them it was a party! They exchanged story and info with DH, checked out Sebastian, got me on an iv, and soon we were on our way to the hospital. I really wished the hospital part didn't happen, but how picky can I be? I got my low intervention, non-medicated birth, and Sebastian got his "waterbirth." I am so proud of DH- he did an amazing job bringing his little boy into the world! Things have been really well, and we are so in love with our new addition!
