what am I doing wrong?

I am not having a good experience with cding and need some advice. Here's my situation. My baby is 10 mo and weighs about 18 lbs. My babies are all long and skinny.

I have a set of DSQ AIOs with snaps and a few inserts. I got these as hand me downs (YAY for free stuff) and they say Comply on the tag. I'm having problems with the fit. I thought the mediums would be the right size but the leg openings are way too big and leak. The size smalls are better but don't have a high enough rise and sometimes leak out the back. Also, they are so tight they leave marks on dds skin from the snaps.

I bought a few covers and prefolds. The covers are WAHMs, from Hooray 4 Baby and I chose them primarily because they were cheap. Made of PUL and flannel. They say they fit from 8lbs to 35+lbs. I bought some Chinese prefolds, size regular. I have washed them lots of times and they really don't fit with the covers. They seem way too big. I think they would be too big even if I put them on a bigger baby. These, at least, don't leak, but they occasionally fall off! I end up pinning to keep them on but I'm really not happy with pins. And the result is just so bulky. And they don't go on quickly.

I went back to sposies after about a month but I'd rather do cloth for the next month or two while we have no income. So I'd really rather not spend money.

Should I
--try to trade my regular prefolds for a smaller size? what website?
--try to sell some of my diapers and try a totally different kind? Is it normal to ask for half the price of the diapers new? I'm kind of interested in g diapers and g flaps but probably couldn't make enough selling my diapers to get a whole supply...
--try a snappi? I just found a couple places to buy these with no shipping, so that's good.
--trim my prefolds? If I do this can I just stick the diaper in the cover and put it on? I mean, with no snappi or folding while putting it on baby?

Any advice would be appreciated. I am such a novice.

I'm not sure if "regular" is the same as the premium size prefolds, but at any rate, we fold ours down a couple inches in back (for girls, boys you usually fold in front) and then wrap around and snappi. Once the cover's on, it should fit pretty trim actually.

Definitely try the snappi. I'd look up various folding methods online for your prefolds- sorry I don't have any links handy, but I know you can find all sorts of videos and pictures of how to fold prefolds- there are many different ways to fold. Then experiment on your LO to find what works best. The nice thing about prefolds is the flexibility- you can fold them different ways for different effect. There's definitely a learning curve to cloth, but it goes quick and then you'll forget what it was like to not know what to do You may even end up liking your pins.

I don't know about your aio's, but that doesn't sound like a good fit and unless you could find a way to tinker and adjust them better, I'd probably try to find something else if it were me.

I would try using a Snappi first. You could also try a trimmer fitting cover.
