milking dripping from baby's nose

My DD, who is nearly 2, periodically has milk drip out of her nose after nursing. I'm wondering if that is normal? Could it indicate a structural issue? (I have long wondered about structural issues with her)

I just asked the ped about this. My son is only 2 months old but does the same thing. It is normal and just the baby sucking too much before swallowing while laying on his side etc. It never happens when he is more upright.

Good. I thought I was crazy when I saw milk pour out of ds' nostrils when he was fairly newborn. I only saw it once it was there, so I wondered- did that come from his mouth and move up? I'm pretty sure it came from his nose and moved down. I only saw it twice and never as it happened. Now at least I know I wasn't crazy, milk really did come out of his nose. It hasn't happened in a while now.

Thanks for the reply. My google search kept coming up with cleft palate issues. So, I guess it can be an indication of a problem but isn't necessarily.

No, it's normal. Both of my kids did it once in a while if they were getting a lot or nursing at a funny angle.

At nearly two it should not be still comming out the nose - I see from some of your other posts that she has a chromasone annomilly - have her cheaked for a submucus or ocult Cleft Palate - these at this age can be nearly invisible to even a regulate ENT. They are relatively common is chromasone kids. Thankfully they are a relativly easy surgical fix - My DD's was fixed at just shy of 3 and she is doing fantastic!

The good thing is that its breastmilk and its coating the inside of her nose, preventing infection.

Do you mean 2, or 2 months? At 2, I think it's unusual and that it's worth the time to have her checked for some kind of palate issues. At 2 months, I wouldn't think twice about it-- it happened to all my kids as young infants.

Ooooh I read it as two months, too.

i have a pretty forceful letdown and my daughter is 20months and when we lay down at night nursing, it's been known to happen occasionally. it happened almost all the time when she was an infant.
