Help with simple newborn hat pattern

I'm a semi-beginner knitter (I've done a few hats, scarfs, etc) and for some reason I'm having trouble interpreting a part of the pattern for a very simple newborn hat. The pattern is found at: http://knitting.about.com/od/pattern...b-baby-hat.htm

The part that is confusing me is in the "Shaping the crown" section. It says to knit the rest of the hat in stockinette stick (I know how to do this - k1 row p1 row) but then all the rows only specify knit...should I be knitting every row (from 1-6) and then purling every row (from 1-6)??

Thanks for any insight you can provide!!!

Are you knitting in the round or flat/straight? Stockinette st when done flat is knit one row, purl one row, k a row, p a row. St st when done in the round (on a pair of circular or dpns) is done only knitting.
This pattern is done in the round in a rib, so you k1,p1 for however many inches it said. Then, in the crown, you quit doing the rib and just knit all your stitches, following the instructions for the decreases.
hth.

In the round on dpns. And yes, that helps completely! I didn't know that stockinette was different if knitting flat or in the round. Good to know. Thanks very much
