anyone use flats? which ones? where do you buy them?

I'm going with flats and, well, the title says it all... which ones do you love and where do you get them?

... Also, which covers (types/brands) work best with flats?

Thanks!

I love the gauze flats from integritydiapercompany.com. So soft! Regular birdseye flats work fine, too, though. They work fine folded in eighths and laid in a Bummis cover, or kite folded and Snappi fastened under a Mother-ease air flow cover or a wool cover.

That being said...I still like prefolds better.

Birdseye flats from http://www.greenmountaindiapers.com and Dappi nylon pull-on covers from http://www.cottonbabies.com

Used these on ds until he was big enough for brown-edged Cloth-eeze prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers. I will only use Dappis. For one thing, they're only $5 for two. Can't beat that. And they actually work, don't leave red marks, are easy to use, keep clean, and don't hold a stink like PUL! Good luck and hope the flats work for ya! They worked fine for ds until he was about six months old; then he was wetting so much he needed the absorbency of a pf.

Anyone else LOVE their flats?

I'm really tempted to get some flats from Little Lions.
I have some birdseye ones, I think. I don't have any covers that I like atm (some are on the way!) and don't like to snappi. I did use one snappi's once, and loved how it felt- super trim, and seemed like it would be really comfy.

I found a fold I really think would work (with a little tweaking) laid in a cover. I tried it briefly, but the cover didn't seem comfy for ds so it came off.
Crud, I can't find it now...grrrr

Here it is: THE TERRY SQUARE DIAPER FOLD

What fold did you use with the receiving blankets? I have a million billion left over from DD and am thrilled to hear they work as flats - was hoping they would!

I always used the origami fold in the early days. It was by far my favorite.

Later on I just did the prefold fold and made sure to roll the sides in a bit (where the diaper goes under the butt and between the thigh creases) to make sure poo was caught

I've been using sposies for so long at this point (lots of moving and my oldest outgrew them while my youngest was in a weird size) that I'm a bit rusty, but with money being tight now I'm thinking of resurrecting them for my youngest since my oldest is daytime potty trained.

ETA: The only issue I had with the flannel is that the snappi did not want to stay on (the weave of the fabric is too tight) so you may want to get some diaper pins and practice with those because they hold much better

I think my husband will pack up and leave if I introduce diaper pins

Not seriously - actually I suspect he'll be telling everyone how thrifty we are. I'm scared of pins - but I have been thinking I should try them as I've read that they can be more adjustable than Snappis.

Thanks for the tips!

Its gonna sound funny but whenever I had a pin that doesn't want to go through the diaper I just run it along my scalp and then it would go right through. The oils on my scalp helped it slide through. You can also get a bar of soap and cover it with a piece of cloth. Stick your pins in there after a diaper change and pull out a set thats been stuck into the soap and it should slide right through

Pins really are easy! And I never had a problem with DS figuring out the pins like I did with him figuring out the snappi and taking off his diaper!

Best flats--flour sack towels. You can get a pack of five for $6 or so at Walmart. They're big, sturdy, snappi works just fine. I do have to use two at a time for my big 2 1/2 year old.

Regular Gerber birdseye flats were horrible--thin, totally warped after one washing, pilled horribly, and so small that I couldn't fold them up at all. I had to use three at a time and even that really wasn't enough.

I make my own. I use a combo of flats, prefolds, and pockets ... Love my flats though, they're what Mom used with all of us. I guess I like all three types, although honestly anymore I use mostly prefolds or flats (dd2's nearly three, they're faster). I do love seeing flats drying on the clothesline ....

I use the kite fold; I have made both diaper flannel flats and birds-eye flats. Mom prefers the diaper flannel; her mother preferred birds-eye and so do I.

I don't use pins or snappis. I use the Bummis Original covers and they hold it in place just fine without anything else being used. This worked with my off-the-charts skinny dd1, and off-the-charts-chubby dd2.

To make:
I straighten the grain on the cloth first (snip along the selvedge, then hold both sides of the snip and rip across the fabric). Then, cut snips every 30 inches across the fabric (that's the width of one unfinished flat). Rip each one, then square it by ripping the other edge so that it's a 30 inch square.

To hem, fold over about 3/8 inch, then another 3/8 inch, and zig-zag around edges (I use up all my bits of bobbin thread on them). Don't worry about hemming the selvedge, it's finished enough.

I use the scraps from squaring the birds-eye, as backing for flannel/birdseye diaper wipes. 9 inch squares; sew together like a pocket (wrong sides together, leaving a 3 inch opening for flipping). Flip, zig-zag the edges closed/flat.

You want to pre-shrink birds-eye or diaper flannel before making the diapers, both will shrink!! You can find either in a fabric store (the clerks may not know what you're talking about, but it's often with their muslin, or else with the ticking fabric etc. -- a JoAnn's type store, not a quilt fabric store); or you can find it online too, although I've not ever ordered it online.

The best advantage of pins over Snappis in my experience is that you can use pins to go coverless, something that can't be (safely) done with Snappis. HOWEVER, I was never able to get the hang of using flats coverless. They always fell off if they didn't have a cover over them. This is one of the biggest reasons why I prefer prefolds.

I LOVE Green Mountain Flats. Good for lightweight summer blanket too. I wish they could keep them in stock. I just fold mine into a big pad and lay it in the cover.

The flour sack towel idea is a great one. A towel would be lighter weight than a flat.

little lions flats are what we use and they are great. I use one with a gerber birdseye flat for a doubler and they hold even though naptime for my 20month old. We pin or snappi and use either bummis covers or fleece or wool pants over. My favorite thing about flats is how easy they wash and dry. They have never been stripped in the year I've had them and they wash SO easily and never stink. They dry on the clothesline in 30minutes or less in the summer and in a few hours inside in the winter. We line dry exclusively and flats are a godsend.
