Don't know how to diaper 2 kids

I currently have DD (9 mo) in a WAHM fitted cotton fleece dipe with a Thirsties M cover. She has TONS of room in them, I feel like she will never ever outgrow them- and when she does, she'll outgrow the rise before the wrap-around becomes a problem.

Unfortunately, i only have 10 of them and I don't love them enough to want to buy more but I NEED more, desperately. I was going to make more, but I'm a horrible procrastinator and have never sewed a thing in my life and as such haven't even ordered fabric, so I've been looking at the used dipes for sale on MDC

So first I need more for DD.

But then I've got another little one coming in January and want to do cloth with him, too, obviously. DD will be 14 months at that point.

I'm really liking the look of the one-size pocket diapers, and was initially thinking I could reuse them on the next baby but there's no way DD will be done with them by the time DS is born.

Should I buy one-size for him and just more fitteds w/ covers or M-size pocket diapers for DD? Does it make sense to buy a one-size diaper for DD at this age, or would she have mostly outgrown its usefulness?

Is it feasible to buy a LOT of one-size diapers, and just change the snap settings depending on what child they'll be going on to? Or will it wear out too quickly and/or be way more effort then it's worth?

I don't know WHY I'm so completely baffled by this- probably because money is tight and I don't want to screw up and buy diapers we don't use.

If anyone has any words of wisdom it would be very much appreciated!

You could use flats (my personal favorite) or prefolds with covers so that you could use the same diapers on both kids. We used the same 50 flats on my son until just recently when he started wearing underwear, so he went almost 2.5 years - from 8 pounds to 37 pounds in the same diapers. We did use four sets of covers (NB, S, M, and L). Next time around, I will skip NB covers so only 3 sets of covers.

We've tried prefolds before and despite my best efforts have always had exploding poo issues. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I've watched endless youtube videos on how to use prefolds and still can't seem to get it right!

What about flats?
How are you using the prefolds? With or without pins or a snappi? What type of cover were you using over them? I think that flats or prefolds in covers are still easier than other options because multi-layer shaped diapers are so darned hard to get clean and dry and most you have to change sizes over time. Flats are easy to fold just the way your little one needs them to reduce blowouts and get absorbency where they need it most, trimness where they don't. Even if you have a poop that blows out of the diaper into the cover, it's still easier for me to wash and dry a diaper and cover separately. We have had good luck with hand made covers using thrifted wool and ones using PUL knit. We also liked a wool cover my mom passed down to me from Nikki (I believe) and a couple of Bumkins someone gave us. We had one BM poop blowout in a sposie when we went to my 6 week PP visit with the MWs, but poop never escaped a CD on my son - ever.

I think buying one size dipes at this point is still a good idea, especially since your next babe will be able to use them. How about more one-size fitteds, since those seem to be working well for you right now? I've heard many good things about the MEOS in terms of fit and durability, so perhaps look for those. They are supposed to work really well with Thirsties covers also.

How big do you expect DS to be? Most newborns are too little to fit in one-size dipes, so the two kids may not be using the same stash right at the beginning anyway.

I was using prefolds with a snappi in a bummis cover- the covers were on loan, so having diapers that exploded onto the covers stressed me out, I was so worried about stains.

I agree though- even now, the only time we get blowout diapers is with sposies, and even with the prefolds the worst that would happen is it would get on the covers.

Alright, you're slowly convincing me on prefolds.... Maybe I just was spoiled by the ease of use of my velcro fitted diapers and overlooked the prefolds too soon.

ETA- for the younger months at least. Once they start crawling and moving i'm not sure i'm willing to use prefolds, but for smaller sizes (or until DD outgrows her diapers) it's definitely worth considering!

I'd expect him to be about 8 lbs- dd was 7 lbs 6 at 40+2 .

I could look into one-size fitted diapers. DD will only be 14 months when DS will be born so could easily stay in her diapers until DS is older. I'm also worried that if I buy used diapers that they might not last through three kids.

I think I'm pretty set on either one-size fitted or one-size AIO style for DD. She is so squirmy and grabby that the idea of trying to get a prefold on her makes me cringe- not to mention how much I'd need to change that prefold since she's a pee-machine.

I've still got a few months before I need to make decisions for DS so I might just work on that later on, I can't make my head cooperate enough right now!
