Sore, bleeding nipples

DS2 just turned 2 (last week - Happy Birthday DS!) and still nurses quite a bit. I went back to work about 6 weeks ago, and so he nurses several times in the evening and 1-2x per night, and then usually once in the morning as he's waking up, which he sometimes skips. I hand-expressed at work for a few weeks, usually just once per day (I'm a lousy pumper and was actually getting more milk out by hand) but I stopped probably 3 weeks ago and wasn't experiencing any engorgement or discomfort.

Then suddenly, last Thursday my left nipple began hurting. I thought maybe DS bit me, but I couldn't see any trauma. It just hurt like the dickens when he nursed. By Friday my right nipple was hurting too. Then the left started peeling (!) and now there's actually an open bloody wound. I've limited DS's nursing dramatically because it's just too painful - I mean like I'm crying whenever he nurses.

Any ideas? I'm putting milk on both nipples, tried Lansinoh, and soother gel pads, all of which helped. Anything touching my nipples stings like crazy.

What on earth is going on? I'm definitely not pregnant (took a test to be sure.) Should I be thinking about thrush, or something else, or just chalk it up to a bad latch/trauma?

Sounds like thrush to me with the peeling. For some fast relief I would do vinegar wipes after every nursing, I cut a paper towel into 4 pieces and use 1 part vinegar to 5 parts water. Keep in a ziploc to use anytime. Make sure you are changing nursing pads and bras. I would also do a probiotic for both of you.
