Breastfeeding in Ye Olden Tymes

We went to the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire yesterday and had a blast!

We also nursed just about everywhere we went, and had nothing but positive reactions (when people even knew, that is ). We even saw several other nursing mamas and babes!

One experience in particular, tho, was so fantastic that I have to share. It was late afternoon and dd was getting tired and cranky from all stimulation. Dh wanted to watch a particular show, so I said I would take dd someplace more secluded to nurse and calm her down. Note: I am not shy about nip, I really just wanted to get dd out of the sun and away from the crowds, but still be near enough to dh so that we could find each other again. The only such place was under a tree, next to and a little behind a vendor's tent. So dd and I settled down to nurse while dh followed with the stroller.

As dh was turning around to head back to the show, the vendor (who I don't think saw me head back, just dh and the stroller) told him he wasn't allowed to be back there. Dh started to protest, but I picked up dd to move on because I didn't want anyone to get in trouble (I was fine with finding another place a little less ideal, as long as it was shaded and quiet-ish). I apologized as I was passing the vendor, saying that I was just looking for someplace to nurse.

As soon as she heard that, she began apologizing to me! She told me to make myself comfortable and not to worry about a thing. She was so sweet about everything and when we finished, she told me that I was welcome to use that spot again if I needed to nurse.

So for any nursing mamas heading to the Ren Faire, there is a wonderful spot to nurse next to the Henna Tattoo tent by the Human Chess Board.

I'm glad you had such a wonderful experience! My dp deals with the owners there on a fairly regular basis, an I'm glad they were so kind about NIP.

(Just watch out for those 5.50 beers at the Swashbuckler! Ye gads!)

My DH and I own a shop at the Bristol Renaissance Faire, and we just love offering our shady sitting area to nursing mamas! : Renaissance festivals are great places to run in to nursing mamas.

I'm glad you had such a positive NIP experience!

I nursed DS as Scarborough Faire in Waxahachie, TX. It was so nice. I sat on the grass in the shade under a tree and watched the bird show. Since I had a gown on, I had to pull my breast out of the top, so I ended up using my veil to cover up. It felt very authentic. At the Ohio Renaissance Festival, I was able to sit on a bench in a lovely little garden. Nursing at Renfests is great - the atmosphere is so relaxing!

a few other suggestions if you go back...There's a smallish arbor with shaded seats down by the gaming grove, if you need to nurse and you're close to there. There's also the "wench" garden, but I don't know that there's a lot of shade there, It's been a few years since I've been back, last time I was there there was a bench with an umbrella. That's beside the Emperor's needle, near the Swashbuckler Grove.
Shade in both areas is kinda dappled, so sometimes it depends on the time of day, but both are places where noone should be able to tell you to stop, unlike some of the "behind the scenes" areas, where some people might tell you to leave.
For anyone who is nervous about NIP, I think the first aid station on privy lane has been suggested as a good spot too.
There might be others, but I've never been there with a nursling in tow, so I'm not sure.
I'm glad to hear you had such a great experience there though

Thanks ladies! I didn't think I'd run into any trouble nursing while there - ya know, since they didn't have formula back then . But it was still nice to experience the almost overwhelming support that I did. :

This makes me really want to go to the Ren Faire when it's here! I do have some friends who are dancing in it, so it would be nice to go see them perform. Dh and I should make a day of it with dd

I wish everyone who went to or worked at the ren-faire would realize that. One of the ren specific forums I'm on had a question about nursing spots at this very faire, several people actually suggested the bathrooms! I'll try to find the thread, there may have been other suggestions than the ones I made.
I also realized I forgot to mention that the arbor has signs above the seats that read "lover's bower" and on the smaller seat "self-lover's bower" I forgot about that when I suggested it, I know that might raise some eyebrows on some people.
