Night time leaks - babe peeing more, or problem with diapers?

OK, so my 9 month old has soaking wet dipes by the end of the night all of a sudden, to the point that it is leaking onto the mattress in when we wake. Is this because he is producing bigger amounts of pee now, or does it sound like the diapers have repelling issues and need to be stripped? FWIW, I am using pocket dipes with PUL and two inserts, and they worked just great up until last month.

Well, is the diaper saturated, or is it soaking in parts while other parts (further away from where he pees) remain dry?

If he's soaking the entire diaper, you need more absorbancy. If he's leaking through while the back or top of the diaper is staying dry, then there are a few possibilities. He might be "pointing" the wrong way in the diaper and missing the absorbant part. Sometimes this happens when the diaper is overall getting too snug- you may need a larger size cover for overnights to accomodate the bulkiness of the extra inserts. Sometimes this happens because he's reaching in and "re adjusting himself" during the night.

DD goes in stages with her night diapering needs. If the diaper is really soaked, it may be time to try something new for a little, or add something like hemp so that you have a lot of absorbency without the bulk.

We never did well with pocket diapers at night, but have always had success with prefolds and covers. Sometimes I need doublers, sometimes I don't.

Could be either. Normally I tell people if the inserts are saturated, that you just need more absorbancy, per PP. However, recently we were having a lot more leaks than normal, and even though the inserts were totally saturated, I just felt like they weren't absorbing as much as normal. So I stripped with Dawn and turned my hot water heater all the way up and it made a huge difference. No more leaks.

Also, if I use a pocket at night, I always have to use 3 inserts. 2 mf and one hemp or visa versa.

hth.

Thank you for the replies. Ruthla, you have some interesting points that had never crossed my mind . It is generally the front being completely soaked while the back remains a bit dryer. I use microfleece and bamboo inserts.

I guess I have to try stripping. Can you share your stripping methods, please? I want to avoid damaging the PUL, specifically.

Christina, congrats on the new addition! :

My night time dipe is working wonderfully, I take a hemp prefold & trifold it, then I add a hemp doubler too, I just lay that in a thirsties cover and adjust snuggly. We've have very few leaks, he's 14 mos. and we've been doing this system for about 9 months now, I loooove it. I got my hemp dipes at
