what does an ec'd (winter) newborn wear?

Thread Starter
I'm already getting tons of one-piece footie outfits (and I haven't even had a shower yet) from well-meaning relatives/friends. They (the outfits, not the friends etc) don't seem like they'd be ec friendly. I haven't said anything because I'm grateful to have SOMETHING for the baby to wear/haven't figured out exactly how this EC thing is going to work anyway, yet.

So what is the ideal outfit for an ec'd newborn? It's very warm in our apartment, unless we open windows (we're right over the boiler room and there is no individual thermostat) and pretty cold outside in December, so I need ideas for around 70-80 degrees and around 0-40 degrees.

Thanks!

We diaper full time, and wear regular baby clothes - mostly onesies with or without pants and always with socks. And then at night long sleeved sleepers or gowns. Our house stays pretty cool.

I think we're on one far end of the spectrum. The other side would just be naked all the time!

I don't find the clothes or diaper to be a problem. It takes a little time to dress/undress, but it doesn't bother us. The baby is able to hold his pee/poo until we get undessed and in position.

baby leg warmers. babylegs makes them - they also sell a cheap version at target.

I was considering this too. I had bought some babylegs, but the seem to be way too tight for my sumo-thigh baby. I think I'm going to make some out of fleece or get some wool longies for when we're around the house. I use covers, pants, etc. for going out. She's coverless at home.

i think newborns are the easiest to clothe, actually, because they spend so much time being worn and cuddled that they really don't need a lot of clothing no matter what time of year (except for when you leave the house).

those little newborn gowns are the *best*!! just pull them up and go! even if you're just diapering a newborn, they poo constantly! to me it'd be a total pain to dress and undress my child a thousand times a day to potty or change. those gowns were really handy.

other than that, i just got a bunch of little white t-shirts. and then because i'm a dork i dyed a bunch of them (along with my prefolds) just so they wouldn't look so institutional so my baby's wardrobe was totally just gowns and t-shirts (and a prefold snappi'd w/out a cover) for the first couple of months of life.

and socks for when you go out.

IME babylegs don't really fit newborns very well. they're great for bigger babies and toddlers though. they didnt really fit my LO's right until they were at least 4 months old or so (and they were all gigantic).

I was also a huge fan of the gowns. So easy to just lift up and drop down. We live in the north so it gets very cold here too. We started EC at 5 weeks, so we used the gowns with babylegs for in house. For the booty we used nothing when we were in a groove, or used a non-waterproof diaper or trainer.

On outings I was a huge fan of split crotch pants with waterproof trainers on top of them. That way you did not have to undress them totally and their thighs stayed warm. Depending on the type of trainer, just pull or flip it down while the pants stay on. Getting fleece or wool split pants was great because if there was a dribble the pants would stay dry. This set up was life saving to me because personally I could not stand the full dressing-undressing-dressing all the time.

I agree- gowns!!! And t-shirts! And also that they spend a lot of time close to you, so body heat is going to keep them warm. Snaps aren't that EC-friendly, you're right, but I did use clothes with snaps at times.

Gowns, but my personal favorites are at Under the Nile: footies that you can pull down at the waist, and kimono shirts:

I personally do not use snapped footies much either.

Organic babylegs are only $7 at babylegs.com. You don't have to go to Target to get cheap ones:

I've found that a nice warm sweater and warm socks are sufficient for naked-butt time, if baby has a hat.
