Our cat died 3 days ago and

we had another stray wander up today. The kitty that passed away was a very sweet stray that wandered up nearly 4 years ago this xmas. She was pretty picky on where she wanted to be touched so she was never allowed with the kids unsupervised so she stayed in our basement. She was an inside/outside kitty that we let out on the weekends to roam. She never went very far, mostly just laid on our front porch. The last few weeks she had been venturing off all day and coming back at nite to sleep. She was spayed so we weren't concerned that she was getting pregnant, just figured she was enjoying her days out.

Literally within a week, she went from a very healthy, semi-fat cat to a very super skinny, lethargic, sickly kitty. She died a few days later We think she got into some poison somewhere, perhaps ate a mouse that ate some (that's why I HATE that stuff!)

My dh calls me this morning to go look in our garage. A beautiful, solid black female was there to greet me. She's super sweet, probably less then a year old. We are going to see if we can find her owners and if not, take her to the vet and call her our own.

It's odd. We haven't had one wander up since our last one, and just days after she died, here's this beautiful female needing a home...

Take it as a gift. That is heart warming. Made me smile.

This reminds me of the story of Greta the cat.

My grandmother died on December 10, 1998. My granny and grandpa had been together for something close to 50 years, and we were all VERY torn up about her death.

My granny was also a BIG cat lover. My grandpa was one of those men who said he hated cats, but you knew he secretly liked them.

On the day of her funeral a solid white long haired *beauty* of a cat came to their front door and would. not. leave.

After that day, it was not uncommon to visit my grandpa and find him asleep in the recliner with the cat asleep in his lap.

I'm not a religious person at all, but I've often said that my granny sent her.

I wouldn't doubt that it is some sort of message.

When I was younger my older sister died, I was an avid cat lover, however for whatever reason my parents weren't interested in getting a cat (I found out later our dog, which had been sick the week before my sister passed had to be euthanized at the vet, but I didn't know it at the time--our parents didn't want to add to our grief and didn't tell us for a couple of weeks). Well, the day before her funeral we had so many flowers my parents picked them up and delivered them to the chapel at the university she attended. Shortly after we got to the school there was a young white cat that appeared, it followed me everywhere while we were putting the flowers in. (no collar or anything)

It followed me the whole time basically. Afterwards, my parents were sort of thinking about it, in the car, and went back out there to get it. It had disappeared, they went looking all over for it.

They always took that as some sort of sign from my sister.

First, about your cat!

Very cool though about the new one showing up!

Antifreeze can be an issue too for outdoor cats. Often vets will check for that if an outdoor cat comes in with symptoms of kidney failure, and I've heard of it happening to outdoor pets over here.

It's such potent stuff...unfortunately an outdoor can can just walk on some concrete with an antifreeze stain and then later injest it while grooming.

The new kitty is an absolute doll. I can't wait for our twins to meet her tomorrow. They saw her the other day when I briefly brought her inside for a quick pet but tomorrow, they will get to spend time with her. My dh took her out to our new house on 9 acres that we are renovating. I went out and got her some toys and flea treatment stuff today. I didn't see any on her but she is coal black so not easy to see, hehe! I'm sure she will love it on our "farm", lots of room to roam.

Antifreeze could definately be a culprit. I have no idea what happened to her. It was really sad losing her, we haven't told our kids yet. Since she stayed in our basement, they only saw her on the weekends and haven't asked about her yet. They are only 3.5 so unless they bring it up, I don't think we will. We sure do miss her though
