My 3wo pukes constantly

Thread Starter
I formula fed my first two. This time, we're breastfeeding. But he eats, he pukes. Like a lot of puke. Chunky, digested puke. It's gross and he's very consistent about doing it. I had thought that with breastmilk, he would be less likely to have digestive issues (my oldest DD had horrible diarrhea as a baby and my youngest DD is STILL constipated all the time). But newborn DS screams until he pukes (he almost never will burp) and then he's hungry again.

Rrrgg! Any advice?

I would take him to a doctor asap and have him checked for pyloric stenosis, just in case.
If he checks out ok, then it could be either a) a food intolerance to something you are eating (ie. milk, citrus, wheat..who knows.) or b) acid reflux.
I hope you get some answers soon.

Is he gaining weight, producing wet/poop dipes, otherwise happy and alert? I agree that you should ask the ped to check for a physical problem (though if he is gaining, otherwise happy, and burning through dipes I don't think it's an emergency call).

In addition to a possible food intolerance or acid reflux, do you know if you have over supply? I know I'm sort of a broken record on over supply, but it really can cause problems for mom and babe and it can take you by surprise. Kellymom has a good list of symptoms and solutions here. If you suspect over supply or over active letdown your ped might have a lactation consultant on staff, or your local LLL leader might be able to offer advice.

What is pyloric stenosis? I have a major puker too and don't want to google and unnecessarily freak myself out (baby is peeing, pooping, and gaining fine). I do have a bit of an oversupply too. Sorry to hijack OP!

Basically its an obsruction in the bowel that prevents the stomacg from emptying into the bowels. A narrowing of the pylorus muscle, which is the lower intestine.
Symptoms include vomiting(commonly projectile vomiting) change in stool(constipation or mucus in stool), failure to gain weight and lethargy. Occurs most often in boys, appearing between 2 weeks and 3 months of age.
Failure to gain weight can be a tricky one, I do know of a baby that was diagnosed with pyloric stenosis but didn't lose weight. I assume they caught it early enough.
Hopefully its as Wombatclay said. An oversupply issue is difficult to work with but easier than P.S. Or a food intolerance or acid reflux for that matter....

Hmm, I'll mention it to the pedi when we see him next week. My baby is the projectile vomit queen. I lay her on a prefold at night and she completely avoids the prefold and launches her puke onto me. But she's certainly gaining, and gaining a lot!

Puking is not normal for breastfed babies. Common yes, but not NORMAL. Especially since your older dds have/had issues with digestion and elimination, my money is on food intolerances that probably run in the family. Personally, I'd cut out all gluten and dairy asap and reassess in 2 weeks. Also, the yahoo group "foodlab" is awesome for food allergy/elimination diet help.

My son is a Happy puker. But I have oversupply really bad and block nurse him for 2-3 feeds at a time.

My oldest had reflux and spit up a lot, it subsuided once he could sit up.

Take care and good luck to you!

I was just looking at that link again and my baby has all of those symptoms, except for the clamping down (which #2 did a lot).

*sigh* I thought my letdown looked ok, but I am guessing not. Nothing I do seems to help either.

First of all ((hugs)) to mom of the puker. This my first ff baby (not bf) and she is a major puker too ... but being a preemie, I'm told its to be expected.

As other mentioned the first question is .... is s/he gaining well and producing enough wets and dirties. If the answer is no then baby isn't getting enough ... which could be a metabolic thing or it could be a physical problem like the pyloric stenosis.

If s/he is a gaining and producing enough then it could be an allergy or intolerance to something in your diet ... most common factors are dairy. And the easiest way to figure that out is to cut them from your diet and see if that helps.

Your description of the "speeew" (as we call it) sounds like reflux. Especially if it happens a while after you've fed your little one. Our FF baby does this often and you can help alleviate some of it but good burping (ha that's a joke!) and keeping them up right for a while after they've been fed. You can also get meds that can help ease or even eliminate the problem.

I hope you get some answers!
