Steer Manure

Thread Starter
I've been adding steer manure to our vegetable gardens since I was little, since its super cheap and readily available. But now I'm starting to worry that the cattle producing this manure have likely been given loads of antibiotics and/or hormones. Could this potentially be passed into the composted manure, and should I be concerned about it?

Proper composting (hot, aerobic composting) will destroy artificial hormones and antibiotics. It's possible for bacterial contaminants like e. coli to survive composting so that is a possible danger, but we use it anyway in our garden.

We just found out that our dogs got hookworm from the manure we used this summer. UGH. We won't be using it again.
