Cat fight

This is just a vent. There isn't really anything to be done about it, and it wasn't anyone's fault (though I suppose some might say it was ours). But I thought I'd share this crazy story!

Last night DH and I were sitting in the living room when we started hearing crashes from the back of the house. The dishwasher was running, so we figured it must be that. DH opened the dishwasher and didn't see anything out of place. Right then we heard more crashing and banging and realized it was outside. We thought somebody was breaking into our patio or something!

DH opened the door and I heard him yell. Squirt, our 11 year old himalayan was in a tussle with some random cat. It honestly looked like a loonytoons cartoon where two animals start fighting and a big ball of dust forms around them as they literally go 'round and 'round.

I reached in (I'm sure some would say this was a bad idea, but I didn't have a lot of other options that I could think of quickly) and grabbed the other cat by the scruff. They were ATTACHED to each other, claws in fur. I had to give a (gentle) shake to get them apart.

I tossed the other cat out of our patio, and took Squirt inside where he immediately tried to run back outside, like "let me at him!" We then put him on top of the dog's crate next to the window and let him sit there swishing his tail.

Once the adrenaline wore off, he seemed fine. He was favoring one foot a bit, and I looked and he tore a nail just a little. He also had tufts of the other cat's fur in there. I'll keep an eye on it for infection, but within an hour he was walking just fine.

I just feel so sad that I no longer feel comfortable letting Squirt out on our patio unsupervised. He LOVES LOVES LOVES going out there and eating grass, and lounging around, and watching birds and squirrels. He's not at all agile, and we had *no* fear of him climbing the 6-7 foot fence that is around our whole patio. It never even occurred to me that another cat might climb IN!

What a crazy night! And as soon as my own adrenaline wore off, it made my morning sickness come back even worse than before!

They do sell outdoor cat enclosures, if you really feel compelled to let him out that could be an option.
