You get five books...

Since we all seem to be big on books here :, I thought it might be an interesting thread for us to list five good, essential books on our faith tradition. I'm quite the minimalist with stuff, so think of it as these are all you get. This is in addition to any sacred texts (Bible, Koran, etc.) and any prayer/devotional book(s).

I'll go first. I'm an Orthodox Christian:

The Orthodox Church
The Orthodox Way - both by Bishop Kallistos Ware
Way of the Ascetics - Tito Colliander
For the Life of the World - Alexander Schmemann
The Year of Grace of the Lord - A Monk of the Eastern Church

Yours?

Oooh, good question.

I'm RC, but I attend an Episcopal church. I might be Episcopalian by now.
At any rate...

Mine are, in no particular order:

Sara Miles - Take this Bread
C.S. Lewis - Mere Christianity and The Screwtape Letters
Lauren Winner - Girl Meets God and Mudhouse Sabbath
Anne Lamott - Traveling Mercies, Plan B, and Grace (eventually)
Karen Armstrong - any and all!

I guess that's five authors instead of five books. Choosing only five books might be next to impossible, though. I'm not very good at this game. Sorry. Next!

These are all books geared TOWARDS Jews, not necessarily teaching about Judaism to non-Jews. Hope that was what you were looking for.

- Harold S. Kushner
Living a Jewish Life - Anita Diamant
Jewish Literacy - Rabbi Joseph Telushkin
Jews, G-d, and History - Max I. Diamont

Aack! I forgot one of Judaism's foremost philosophers. Can I change To Life! to:

To Life! (easy Jewish philosophy) or G-d in Search of Man - Abraham Joshua Heschel (heavy reading).

: hope that's not cheating.

It doesn't matter - could be books you feel are essential for your own spiritual life or introducing others to your faith tradition. The books I listed, for example, are often used by those interested in Orthodoxy, but they are so good, that many of us, even years after conversion, keep going back to them.

(Albeit, completely inaccurate. I never finished it. One of my problems with historical fiction about Jewish themes is that it's fiction but taken as fact by readers who don't know better.)
