My IL's bought DS a toddler bed and want to ask DHs grandpa to buy the mattress. I really want to ask for a latex pad instead, but I'm not sure the price comparison. I've heard wrapping a mattress can reduce off-gassing, would that be more economical? Would the tyvex mattress wrap for allergies work or would that only be a different kind of off gassing? Thanks!

This book feels good in your hands. The paper is heavyweight, and the illustrations flow perfectly.

If you are going to ask him to buy a mattress, it's hard to then tell him what to get. Unless you have an awesome relationship with him.
Personally I would avoid any new conventional mattress. Especially for kids and little ones. We got the boys untreated futons mattresses with super nice wool toppers. I love sleeping on wool. If I ever had a little one I had to set up with a small bed I would get another wool topper and fold it in half or thirds to make a bed.
Good luck.

Ooo, where do you get the wool toppers from? Are they fitted to the mattress, do you use a sheet at all? And what about protecting the matress from accidents? I know plastic is horrible, but are there any other options?
