Please suggest a book for dh

Hello...I need a book rec for my partner. He is a wonderful parent, he strives to treat our dcs with respect and integrity. He has worked really hard to overcome the way he was parented as a child. He is having trouble with GD though (we have never spanked-the problem is the way he talks to dd-they are butting heads) He needs a new approach and is open to any books I suggest.

If you could recommend ONE book what would it be?

Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves by Naomi Aldort.

You can read excerpts online at Google books here.

She has a chapter called, "The Price of Controlling a Child", which would be an eye opener for your partner if he, like most adults, is trying to find gentle ways to "control" the child's behavior (Naomi talks about this in the preface, I think).

Raising our children or Unconditional Parenting by Alfie Kohn. You can even get UP on dvd for those who don't want to read it.

Thank you so much for the recommendations. I wrote them all down. I think I will start with Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves by Naomi Aldort.

Again, Thanks

Unconditional parenting by Alfie Kohn is my biggest recommendation but How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk is a good starter.

FYI, I got both 'unconditional parenting' and 'how to talk so your kids will listen...' on cd for my husbands. He was much more willing to put them on his iPod and listen to them on his way to and from work. It was great because we opened the conversation up for us to discuss what I had read and felt as well as his feelings from the CDs. We had some great conversations on feelings from our childhoods as well.

Playful parenting?

Has anyone read this? I'm trying to decide between raising our children raising ourselves and playful parenting for my next read? I've read U.P. & how to talk.. And have siblings without rivalry which I haven't started yet (my second is only 4 mos).

I like Playful Parenting. It has some great ideas and insights, especially when it comes to butting heads and what grown ups sometimes see as power struggles.

A great book on how to talk w/ your child is "Between Parent and Child". It points out how we often speak more kindly to strangers than we do to our own family.
