If you are in a bookclub IRL...

What books have you read in your bookclub that people have really liked AND have generated great discussions?

In my group we take turns picking the book and my turn is coming up quickly. I'd love to hear what books were really good for your group.
Thanks!

I'm actually in 2 book clubs irl, long story which unfortunately does NOT involve me being a quick reader! For one of them I just finished Mudbound by Hillary Jordan and I LOVED THIS BOOK. The discussion isn't for a week and a half so I can't say that we had a great discussion, but there's plenty to discuss in the book. It also won the 2006 Bellwether Prize if that sways you.
Some other suggestions that I have enjoyed the discussions are :
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen
Isaac's Storm by Erik Larson
Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon
Blindness by Jose Saramago
The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstory (over December break for 2 months)
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

It seems that most book clubs read the same books, which does help people who despite all sense are in 2 book clubs, but hopefully you haven't read all of these yet. It's always tough to make the selection. I was surprised by the over all success of The Catcher in the Rye, my last pick. It was a good discussion. Good Luck!

The books we've read that have generated LOTS of discussion are these;

Jesus Land by Julia Scheeres
We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver
The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay
The Price of Motherhood by Anne Crittenden (This one required some of us holding each other back verbally)
Tales of a Female Nomad by Rita Golden Gelman
The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien
Three Cups of Tea by (but not really) Greg Mortenson
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
The House of the Spirits by Isabelle Allende
Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali
The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks

Over the seven years I've been in this group, these are the books that stand out as having had the most spirited discussions. Three Cups of Tea, for example, elicited a spirited discussion of separate gender education, with some arguing that Mortenson is setting the country further back. Very interesting discussions.

I LOVED reading Color of Water!
We try to pick books that we know others will enjoy (it normally works and we are a VERY diverse group!).

Unwind
Hunger Games (both YA and suggested by a member who works in a HS library).
Like Water for Chocolate
The Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder (we needed fluff last December).
Old Friends and New Fancies (J Austen fluff)
A bit of Jane Ausen
3 Cups of Tea
Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons (up soon, I hope!)

Thanks all for these great suggestions. I can't wait to check them out. There are a few on here that we have read as a group as well and they were great reads and stimulating discussion!
