Leak amniotic fluid with intact mucus plug?

Okay, so this morning at 5:30 I rolled over to feel a rush of fluid exit my body. It wasn't urine, not I don't think it was, but I know it was not urine. Didn't smell like urine, didn't feel like it came from the right spot...it did feel like it came from inside. Like when you start your period, I never think ohoh did I just pee myself, no I know what it is...sometimes when I take a bath I might get this sensation from water that got inside. Okay now that I have established that it wasn't pee, moving on...it happened twice but in amounts of probably 2 teaspoons at a time.

I woke at 7, went to work, felt my uterus contracting, although not painful at all just funny feeling. More than the almost constant BH I have been feeling since 18 weeks and stronger too. MW had me come in for an appointment at 1:30. Before even looking she told me she doubted it was amniotic fluid. she looked with a speculum, not pleasant, and confirmed that it was not amniotic fluid. Additionally she stated that the mucus plug was still in place so it couldn't be my water. OK so finally my question.

Can you leak fluid with an intact plug? I am being cautious just in case, baking my TP, staying at home to use my own facilities and trying to be very careful. Would you do anything different? I am due Monday the 21st.

Thanks!!

Hmm. I really don't know. Hopefully someone else will. That's weird though.

My water broke at 34 weeks with DD, and I had a slow leak just like you are describing. I never lost a mucous plug. I am not an expert, but I don't think you have to lose the plug for your water to break. I believe that is why, in my case, it was called premature rupture of membranes.

Can you ask your midwife to do the litmus paper test? Or can you get your hands on any? Basically you wait for fluid to drip on a little strip of paper, and if it turns from yellow to blue you are leaking amniotic fluid.

Hope this helps!

With my son my water broke at 7 am and I did not have contractions until 1 PM, I never lost my mucous plug until I was about 5 cm dialated... In both births I remember waiting to see my mucous plug, and it always came out into the toilet when I was approaching transition.

Yes, you can certainly leak fluid with a plug still in place. Water can leak out of a very small opening. Plus, the plug could be "clinging" to one side of your cervix, creating a small opening for the water to leak through.

With my second son, I didn't lose my plug fully until 8+ cm.

If it is your water, just keep everything out of your vagina and wait for things to start! You could start taking extra Vit C as a precaution if you're worried about an infection, but the chances of infection are pretty slim anyway.

I've had a bunch of "wetness" that is just discharge, although a few times I've felt it come out and rushed to the bathroom wondering if it was my water, so there's still a chance that it's not your water.
