Help me find a wrap

I sooo want to wrap. I "made" one this last summer out of some stretchier material and it worked but I quickly saw how/why wrapping would not work for me in the long run. Baby #3 is due in December and while I perfer (i.e LOVE) ring slings I want to try a wrap. With DD1 I only used ring slings until she was about 2. Then I used an onbuhimo (pregnant so it was easier) when we were outside for longer periods. I still preffered my ring slings. DD2 wasn't as accomodating. She lived in a pouch. While I like them they are not my first pick. Or my second. She was (who am I kidding...is ) particular and wanted in and out all day from the get go. While I loved the ability to do that in a ring sling I was needing to rethread it more than I wanted to just from the constant back and forth on the fabric (as a result I wore holes in one sling....within the first 9 months...DD1 was in ring slings for 2 yuears and never a hole ). As she got older I branched out and tried a wrap and my onbuhimo. She doesn't like back carries and once they get to a certain age I'm not a fan of front carries. So on my hip she stayed.

I'm small. I'm barely 5'4 and 110-115 not pregnant. I cannot stand to have binding clothes/fabric nor can I have them too loose (OCD issues on it....seriously makes me freak at times like I'm stressed). I prefer form fitting which is why wraps appeal to me. They always look to be the perfect amount of form fitting! However, once on they feel sooooo incredibly bulky. There is way too much fabric for me. I've tried short and long, thin and wide, and they all seem to just add oin the bulk. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but it drives me nuts. I can't have another person stuck to my front AND have any more fabric than the minimum. It's not a matter of getting used to it...it honestly feels like I'm wearing 3 sweaters over a turtle neck and under a fleece winter coat.

I also have a hard time getting them on. I know everyone says to tie it on in the morning and then just tighten as need be and I know that works in theory but the actual putting it on is awkward. Do wrappers have double jointed arms? I always end up with either tails worthy of tripping me or the top is too loose (though still snug enough to securely hold someone).

I was just reading a link (I don't know where...I clicked a link in a post) and it was saying for my measurements to pick a size small since you'll still be able to get most of the popular carries done. They listed a small as about 4.2 meters. That's more than double my height! They said to only use an extra small if you want to do one shoulder carries. The length of that one seems much more user friendly but am I really going to be that limited in carries (fwiw DD1 was 6 lb 10 oz and DD2 was 6 lb 13 oz...I'm not expecting a big baby that takes up more fabric)?

So knowing all that, can anyone recommend a wrap for me? I so so want one. It just seems like it would be perfect given the season I'm having this one in and I like the idea of them so much! Despite the issues I had with mine I still loved it. I don't want to make one this time. I want to buy a quality wrap so that I know it's being done right yk?

TheBabywearer.com is a great resource. I'm small too and one of my favorite sizes is 3.7m. There are quite a few carries you can do with that size. On thebabywearer.com you can find all kinds of information and links to videos on how to wrap with various sizes. There are tons of wraps out there. If you go with a woven wrap as opposed to a stretchy wrap, you can go with a shorter length as they offer lots more support.

Wrapping does take time and practice. I think we all feel awkward in the beginning and all the fabric can be overwhelming. Over time it gets easier. If you have any babywearing groups in your area that can be a big help too. It always helps to see wrapping done in person and get live help.

Congrats on your soon to come little one!

Ok, I read your post and at first I was like...hmmm, I don't think wraps may be for you, since you really don't like stuff around you, you know? But, then as I got towards the end of your post, I started changing my mind. I sounds like you really want to wrap, but you also want it to be light on you and still comfortable. Definitely rule out thicker wraps. I love them myself, but I think that regardless of the length, you'll not like not (at least not now). And as I finished your post, I thought of the perfect wrap for you - VATANAI! It's soft like a baby blanket soft, so you'll like the feel of it on you and it's thin, but not so thin like gauze that you'll feel it too much on you (pressure points). I think you'd really like it.

So for sizing...if you'd like to do carries like front wrap cross carry (FWCC) than I do think you should get a 4.1m. But, if you are ok with being able to do some carries, but still be able to do short cross carry, hip carries and back carries, than a 3.6m would work really really well. You may even be able to do the FWCC, especially once you get good at wrapping.

Instructions - there are tons on youtube, thebabywearer.com and I also have most of the carries here.

I love the babywearer.com...I've been there for a couple years now. I always forget about them for some reason. Off to google the one you mentioned!

I do like the FWCC (and the pocket version...that's my fav.!) and a couple hip ones. DD2 doesn't like back carries and by the time I got my wrap she wasn't small (i.e. wiggle free ). I really want to do a newborn back carry. So so bad!

I think you should go with a shorter wrap with which you won't be able to do all the carries (like front wrap cross carry), but you may be more likely to use it because it's easier and faster to put on.

I agree with the 3.6 meter plan. You can do a carry like the front wrap cross carry, but instead of crossing the fabric in the front, you tie it under baby's bum. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9v6tSljTt8 So, less fabric. You can also do a kangaroo carry with this size wrap.

You'd be able to do a newborn rucksack carry, and a hip cross carry which can work great for a newborn or a 3 year old! And this is an easy one to leave tied on and pop the child in or out of, usually without needing to readjust.

I've never tried a vatanai, but I've heard good things. An EllaRoo is a good thin wrap too.
