Would love to have a link about the polio incident...I do believe it was in MN and the child did not have symptoms; it was found coincidentally in looking for another condition...another half truth story for sensationalism.
The Amish didn't think the tetanus would be transmittable, they were just afraid that it could happen to them too if they didn't vax. Sorry I didn't make that clear!

Here is a link to one of the polio articles from the 2005 scare in MN:

I remember that the Amish in our community (probably 200 miles from this "outbreak") were approached by public health and many were fearful of it. Sad b/c none of the four people w/the strain of polio were showing any signs of having polio. They had confirmed cases of the polio strain b/c their feces had been tested. And the only reason they were tested at all is b/c they had a connection to this baby that was immune compromised because the baby's parent/parents were ex-Amish.

Asusan and atobols, we should all get together sometime! My first DS was born up at Dunlap and my second was born at Pomerene (due to insurance changing between the two). I'm actually over in Carroll County, and the amish are slowly starting to move in around us... and the differences between one family and another is pretty amazing

while not addressing the issue of the Amish and communicable diseases, this article was interesting and highlighted the low level of autism among the Amish
