Silly question about dried beans

I typically purchase canned black beans and adzuki beans but want to get away from canned foods to save on cost and to avoid BPA liners. Beans are my quick go-to thing so dried is going to change that since they take a while to cook. I'm curious if it's possible to cook a large amount of dried beans in the crockpot and then freeze in smaller portions so they're ready quickly? Will freezing make them mush or would they still make good veggie tacos, soups, etc? Any other thoughts on keeping beans convenient when using dried?

Buy a pressure cooker.

Yes, cooked beans freeze well.

I always do big batches & freeze them. They freeze very well with no change in texture. I always soak my beans overnight drain & use fresh water to boil, this reduces the gas problem associated with beans a ton! Once cooked, cool, & place into canning jars & freeze, it works beautifully simple to defrost in the fridge or on the counter & so much cheaper than canned beans! I just made humus the other day from some frozen garbanzos & it is so incredibly yummy!

I do cooled beans frozen flat in freezer bags. I bet the silicon muffin tins people use for stock would work great (and less plastic. still silicon though. but glass is so hard to freeze in).

Definitely making big batches and freezing makes them convenient. I think its about 2/3 of a cup dry beans = 1 can beans? I'm not sure, I read that somewhere. Since I don't use canned beans ever, I don't have recipes to convert.

Great question! I just froze some in tupperware containers for the first time this week, and was wondering how they would be. Now I have my answer, but I will try in glass next time, thanks!

I made a big pot of bean soup in my crockpot last night and am freezing the remainder in portions. I haven't had any problem with the beans being too mushed up when re-heating.

Thanks all! Next trip to the HFS I'm going to buy some and try it. My plan was also to freeze flat for ease of thawing and for freezer space (harkening back to my days of pumping! ). I hate to use plastic bags but I use them so rarely anymore and wash/reuse so I'm telling myself it's OK for this.

dachshundqueen, how long do they take to cook in a pressure cooker? Mine broke so I need a new one anyway.
