I have a 10 year old who is interested in old fashioned things (me too). We would like book reccomendations for books about daily life in Upper and Lower Canada, Voyagers and Natives.

TIA,

Well, it's not Canada (northern WI, though), and it's early 1800's instead of the 17th & 18th centuries - but Louise Erdrich's trilogy for older kids (and adults) is pretty amazing.

The first book is The Birchbark House, it's followed by The Game of Silence and The Porcupine Year.

Read the review of "The Birchbark House" I linked to - a sibling dies in the middle of the book and it may be too much for sensitive kids. I recommended it for kids 11+ just because of that.

You might find some good books for kids in Oyate's catalog: http://www.oyate.org/catalog/index.html

take a look at their books to avoid section too (like that appalling "Brother Eagle, Sister Sky" book)

Calico Captive by Elizabeth George Speare is about a girl from New Hampshire who was kidnapped with her family by Indians and taken to Montreal during the French and Indian War. It's got both Indians and Voyagers, but it is not a politically correct view of either group. However, it is based on a true story.

The King's Daughter by Suzanne Martel is a good YA novel about a young woman who is sent to New France as a "fille du roi" to marry a settler. I think it's out of print but it's probably at the library:

The Story of Canada is a good reference book:

Janet Lunn has also written some excellent historical novels about Canada. The Hawthorn Bay trilogy starts with The Root Cellar:

And you might want to try the Dear Canada series. Here's one by Janet Lunn about the 1837 Rebellion:

And one about the Loyalists:

Hope these help!
