Well, it's not Canada (northern WI, though), and it's early 1800's instead of the 17th & 18th centuries - but Louise Erdrich's trilogy for older kids (and adults) is pretty amazing.
The first book is
The Birchbark House, it's followed by
The Game of Silence and
The Porcupine Year.
Read the review of "The Birchbark House" I linked to - a sibling dies in the middle of the book and it may be too much for sensitive kids. I recommended it for kids 11+ just because of that.
You might find some good books for kids in Oyate's catalog:

take a look at their books to avoid section too (like that appalling "Brother Eagle, Sister Sky" book)
