need cover crop recommendations

Thread Starter
I'm thinking of trying a cover crop for the first time, and I'm getting a little overwhelmed looking at the info online. I'm in zone 6 (6a, I think), and want something I can plant in the next couple of weeks and till under in time to have the garden ready for spring crops. Can anyone tell me what would fit that description?

Hairy vetch, fava beans, or winter wheat are supposed to be good options. I planted hairy vetch yesterday, my first winter cover crop I hope it does well...and it doesn't get flooded out tonight!

Seconding the vetch/fava/wheat combination. Bountiful Gardens sells cover crop mixtures that are designed for backyard gardeners. You could just go with one of their mixtures, and then you don't have to worry about getting the proportions right yourself.

Something like that would work. Though I'd try to find it locally. Though remember to mix it with an innoculant if you have any legumes in the mix.

They have a good info sheet about it.
