US mamas, I need diaper cover suggestions!!!

Hi!

This is my situation: I have an 11 month old baby boy. He is a large baby (30 lb, and his thighs measure 14.2 inches (each) LOL. Due to the fact that I live in Serbia, where cloth diapering is virtually unheard of, and I am a CD mama, we came so far with only flat gauze diapers, though lately we started using sposies for the night. This outdated system has worked well enough for us, I do the origami or jo fold, pin it up, and then pull just a regular, boys underwear over it, and that's it, works great home, but I have to use sposies for the outings and for the night, which is a strain on the budget, plus I hate, hate, hate Pampers and the way it stinks (I heard also that Pampers arrives to Serbia unpacked, and is packaged here, so kids get infections, since its not sterile)....well, it just happens that my best friend lives in Boston, and her mom is now visiting her. She will be back in October and can bring me back some diaper covers, but since I have never really seen or felt the proper diaper cover I have no clue what to ask for, and it seems that they come in all different ranges, so these would be my requirements:

-it has to be cheap (my friend will not accept money from me, so I cannot order something expensive, anything in the line of thirsties would be fine)
-my kid is very active, so something that will not slide down
-this is the one and only diaper cover he will ever have, so it has to be something that will fit him throughout the next year
-he is a large baby with huge thighs, so again something that will not hurt him

as I mentioned already, I plan to use gauze flats underneath, and how many covers do you reckon I need? I was thinking 4, and I will also get her to buy me snappies as well, another miracle of the modern civilization I have never encountered before

Thank you so much for reading this and helping out, please point me to some web pages I could forward to my friend

My suggestion would be Bummi SWW http://nickisdiapers.com/catalog.php?category=53 they wil fit his chunky legs well another to consider then simple plain pull on covers like these http://nickisdiapers.com/catalog.php?category=56 alos great for chunkier thighs and they simpily work and are very affordable.
And honestly if I could I would really try to see if shes would bring you a few pockets like the fuzi bunz large they will run about $17 each though that does include a $4.50 value insert but I think it will be soo worth it to have some "night time/naptime" cloth diapers evern if it just 1-2. Have a gift for her she can't refuse

I use and like Thirsties. For us they have been durable and relatively inexpensive. I'd recommend a large in the traditional cover, as their newer Duo Cover (comes in 2 sizes only) is not cut quite as full.

The disadvantage of any velcro cover is that the velcro (aplix) can wear out over time, though our covers have been in use well over a year and are still going strong.

You might get a couple just pull on diaper pants (like Dappi) to have as back-up. They are very inexpensive, durable, easy to clean, and don't have velcro to wear out! I can't speak for the fit on chunky thighs, as ours are pretty average around here.

Another option to consider would be wool. While it can be very expensive, you can also get around that if you can knit or sew up some recycled sweater covers. Then you'd just need some lanolin... We often use wool over night and I'd probably use it during the day more if I had more of them. I've been sewing up longies from old sweaters for my newborn. We use those a lot and he'll probably live in them during the winter!

I like the Thirsties, and we get a better fit with the aplix. It can wear out, but if you're able to line dry at all, that can extend the life of it.

Nikky's covers. Still the best in my book. Around for about 20years and bulletproof.

I love Bummis covers. I used one on my super-chuck niece when my sister ran out of dipes at a family dinner. It was the 15-30 lbs size, and it fit her 33lbs (at the time) self just fine. I've found that they definitely fit beyond the size range listed. The ones I have now were bought for my then 14 pounder, who 18 months later is only 21lbs. They've been washed at least 3 times a week, if not more, and are still as good as new.

Thank you mamas!!!! You have been of immense help in my diapering musings! Now I have a much clearer idea of what to expect and what to get I think we have a winner, but I'm not saying, hehhehe...

I am very exited about upgrading my oh so simple and retro diapering methods! I think I'll follow the good advise and in the end get 2 diaper covers and two fuzi bunz

Again, thank you all for taking your time to help out!

Cheers,
Ivana

awsome I'd since this is your one time to get some covers I'd really push for 2 more day time covers or at least one. or like a pair of nylon pull on pants even http://www.cottonbabies.com/product_...products_id=97 these are $5 for 2 covers and they totoally work.

i think 4 covers would be a better amt, even if like other suggested a couple of them were the cheaper pull on style. i hand wash my thirsties covers and it seems to be much easier on the velcro. they still look brand new at 3 months old and used very often.

Pull on covers look like a great option!!!Thanx! It is amazing with how little money and dedication you can cloth diaper a baby BTW, we don't have/use driers around here, so I guess everything should have a good shelf life

I would say hands donw the Wonder Wrap. It is a onesize cover that grows with the baby. It will not leak. We use that on at night over any diaper we use.
