What ?'s should I ask about Inductions?

I need to know what to make sure that I am aware of about inductions. Can someone give me a list of questions to ask at the doctor's office tomorrow?

Find out your Bishop's score if induction is suggested.

If you aren't favorable for induction but all else is well (and you are getting pressure), try to see if you can put it off a day or two and reevaluate then. Then do the same again and again.

My c/s was a failed induction and I didn't know any of this beforehand. Kudos to you for informing yourself.

I'm going in for my 2nd induction (was induced w/ dd2 and now am going to be w/ this baby) on Thursday. This is what I would suggest:: make SURE they are NOT going to use cytotec on you--cervidil is the much safer choice. Ask if you can labor as long as you want without them braking your water...that way you aren't 'stuck' for having a c-section if takes a while. My induction w/ dd2 last 36 hours (yes, really!) and while it was long and a big process, they didn't brake my water until I was SURE I wanted them to (at 6cms) and I was well into labor by then. I credit that to them not pushing a section on me.
Take all your 'regular' birthing stuff too--ball, herbs, anything that was going to make it special, still do it:-)
Start off on the lowest setting of pit.....
Hmmmm if I think of anything else I'll come back

You can ask what the medical indications for induction are (only being post-dates isn't one). You can ask for a non-stress test to evaluate how your baby is doing instead of an induction. If you would like a lit review of what the medical research says about inductions, PM me. Or, check out "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth."

If you are facing a Pit induction, would your OB first strip your membranes? And give you a day or two to go into labor.

If you go the route of an induction, can you have cervadil placed one evening and then go home? If labor starts that night, can you wait at home (instead of still having to be at the hospital at 7 am the next morning) until you feel like being at the hospital?

Monitoring: can intermitent exteral monitoring be used so you can walk around, shower, use the bathroom and push upright? when would an internal monitor be recommended?

AROM: is there a point at which your OB typically breaks patients' water? under what conditions? can you wait until it ruptures naturally (yes, this may possibly make your induction take longer, but it will also reduce your risk of infection)?

Length of labor: can you get a sense of long your OB is willing for induction to take? (for reference, most inductions are started first thing in the morning, often Monday morning here, and then delivery is finished by 7 pm. If you aren't progressing quickly enough to deliver by 6-7, then patients will be told they aren't adequately progressing, their contractions are close enough together, etc and that more Pit is needed. FTP c-sections are also being done.)
