Tea?

I have some green tea that says not to drink while pregnant or nursing....it's Yogi Green Tea Kombucha with lemongrass, passion fruit, and plum. It does have caffeine. It's soooo yummy! I have a 2 year old nursling, so is it probably safe to have 1 cup a day??

I drank caffinated tea throughout my first pregnancy and for almost 21 months of nursing. I think it made DD pee more often, and might have contributed some to her being a "very active baby" from the womb on out, but I don't think it's had a detrimental effect on her health. She's had one tummy bug and 2 colds in her 22 months of life. I wouldn't stress about the caffiene, especially at this point, but if you notice negative changes in her sleep or pottying after you've had the green tea, you might want to lay off until she's weaned.

This time around though (I'm newly pregnant) I plan to consume much less caffiene, since I'm in a place where that's more culturally possible (was in Ireland and living with lots of Irish people before).

There are probably a couple reasons for the warning being on the box.
1) Studies have found that green tea can inhibit folate absorption.
2) Kombucha is a a natural detoxifier. No detox is recommended for pregnant and/or nursing women.
3) Some of the ingredients may be contraindicated for pregnancy/lactation. (A lot of the Yogi Teas have a warning for this reason)

The caffeine content, while it should be noted, is minimal and is not the reason for the warning. (Context: It is recommended that pregnant woman consume less than 200mg/day. Green tea has approx 20mg/cup. A Starbucks coffee has approx 180mg/cup)

So, 1 cup a day with a 2yo nursling is probably fine. Enjoy!

Dr Hale categorises Kombucha tea as L5 (=contraindicated), based on reports of severe illness and one fatality possibly associated with drinking the tea.
