Need some advice about losing weight while breastfeeding

I hope I can find some experienced moms on here who have BTDT! my DS is now 17 months old but still BF'ing a lot. I have been trying to eat fairly sensibly but not trying to lose any weight since he was born. I did lose around 6 lbs in June when we went on a trip for a week and I ate a lot less because I was in a non-TF house. (DS and I mostly ate what I had brought or managed to buy there, plus some meat and veggies that were served.) I must have been busy enough too that I didn't think too much about my appetite.

Well the weight came back and then some. I'm getting really fed up. Some SAD sneaks in there but we eat pretty healthily otherwise. I think it's the carbs. This seems to coincide with my baking of no-knead bread over the last 4 months, plus the once a week homemade ice cream. Carbs have always been an issue for me. I remember when I did Atkins for 2 yrs back in the day, feeling so amazing. And when I started TF I was single and ate very very simply, and that also made me feel extremely healthy.

I want to know what I can safely cut back on and by how much, without affecting DS. Is cutting out all grains too much while BFing? And all sweeteners? Do I still need to have a little, say, a slice of bread every day or two, and maybe some raw honey/coconut oil balls? The Paleo diet sounds intriguing and I know I'd FEEL good doing it but wonder if that's going too far. It's very, very hard for me to just eat a little less, I get sooo hungry and I MUST eat. My appetite is crazy. I really don't want to wait until he's weaned to start losing. I'd love to get rid of at least 10 lbs starting now.

You would think that with a 36 lb 17 month old, he'd be sucking me dry of every extra calorie I ate and I'd be a waif by now. Maybe my body is keeping on extra fat as a famine precaution knowing it's got to feed that ravenous boy? TIA everyone, for any tips you can give me.

sorry, no advice for loosing weight whilst breasfeeding ....

just to tell you that I found very hard to loose weight in a similar situation to yours ... & on the other hand my youngest self weaned barely a month ago and I very quickly felt like I was another person litteraly in relation to food (food choices, preferences, quantities, feeling of fullness) and the weight is coming off

... so I do believe in the theory of the "extra fat as a famine precaution" for some moms

.... but not others ... (knew a fellow mom my stature in height but half my weight who had had a child twice the size of my very small one and was still breasfeeding another one and eating loads ... everyone was wondering where the food was going ... it didn't show on her body !)

= it seems so individual & I think mainly hormonaly influenced

good luck, I hope you find something that works for you ....

I'm also breastfeeding a three month old - and we cut out all grains a couple weeks ago. I feel just fine, lots of energy, and plenty of milk.
We're kind of doing a modified Paleo, but I'm making yogurt and still using some butter and a little cheese. I don't to cut out too much too fast, but may cut out the butter and cheese after another week or two.
The only time it's a problem is when I don't get enough fat due to lack of planning since I'm used to just grabbing some cheese and sprouted bread.
Now, as far as weight loss, i don't know if it's helping. i have 30 lbs to lose, and it's coming off slooooow, like maybe a half lb. a week.
I don't over eat and I do exercise so all I can figure is it's hormones from bf'ing

Oh, this is really very heartening, thank you! It's like I don't know what's wrong with me, I have to eat and eat and eat. If I try portion control, it just means I'll be back out in the kitchen a few hours later, taking a spoon to the coconut oil and nut butter, and scrounging in the leftovers!

hi, elleystar! holy moly i can not believe how big your LO is!! i thought E was big and she's not even 25 lbs

anyway, to address your questions... i know lots of people who have kids with gluten intolerances and they aren't doing any grains (or just brown rice), so i don't think there's any harm in going off grains if they are not helping you to feel healthy.

IME, the only thing that helps me lose weight while BF'ing (which i've been doing 6.5 straight years now, through two pregnancies and tandeming and the works) has been to exercise. my hunger is massive when i nurse. which is OK, i think my body knows what it needs to do in order to properly nourish itself and my kids. but i do think some peoples' bodies want to hang onto that spare fat as a precaution, and the only thing for that IME is building muscle and moving your body to burn some of that fat. i was the most sedentary after DS was born because we were selling our house and moving, and it took me longer to get back to pre-pregnancy weight with him than it has with DD2 - almost a year longer, actually. the difference has only been the amount of exercise i've done. my weight had totally been holding steady for a long while, then i started teaching 3 more yoga classes than i had been, plus walking/hiking more and working out occasionally, and not only did i lose weight, but more importantly i converted a lot of fat to muscle and dropped several clothing sizes - i was a size 10 in March, and am back in my size 6 jeans now, even though i only lost 10 pounds on the scale.

so while i think what you eat can make things better or make things worse, i think regular movement is key.

HTH!

My ds is 8 weeks, and is EB. I have so many areas that need weight loss, and I am finding it is not coming off that easy as after my first child. What is the only help is exercise. I am trying to loose the weight, but very slowly. I do some hard workout one day and the next day, yoga. I really love tae bo, not sure if that is even done anymore, but it is a classic and still works.

I am wondering what you mean by:

At that age, is he eating solids? If you are worried about supply, I don't know how much he needs at that age- like a full supply if he gets solids too. I may be more concerned about supply if your child were alot younger.

I think my body is in famine mode this time, but don't feel as good about myself, so I am working out. It is the only thing that works for me.

Hi pixiepunk! Yeah you wouldn't believe the size of this kid...he's 36.5" tall, and has huge fat feet-wears size 9 See Kai Runs. We shock people wherever we go. Wouldn't you think that just carrying that lug around as much as I do would make me buff?

Bluebirdmama1-I guess I hadn't thought much about supply decreasing. You know how 'They' always say not to diet while breastfeeding. I guess that my concern is more that I don't want to cut out a food group so drastically that I create a nutritional deficiency of some sort, kwim? Either in my BM, or in my body since the BM would be pulling what it needed from me. My DS DOES eat solids, but I tell ya, he was late on the solids bandwagon, and is still pretty far behind other kids his age. He doesn't eat a large amount of anything (except homemade plain yogurt), and he hasn't mastered chewing yet. (For example if I give him some Cheddar Bunnies, I have to bite all the heads off first or he'll wind up trying to swallow them whole.) He can't tear into anything tough. So while he probably only nurses 3 times during the day and 2-3 at night, he still needs it nutritionally more than one would think.

We moved a month ago to a house in town, which I thought would really help me. We're right by a great walking trail, and I'll put DS in the stroller and go for a good brisk walk (big hills and everything) about 45 minutes, almost every day of the week. It hasn't helped a bit. Honestly exercise has never helped me shed any body fat at all. It sure makes what I got look better though, so I do it. Diet has always been key for me.

Ah well! I do feel better now. I think I'll cut grains and sweeteners down to a very bare minimum and trust that at the very least, once he's weaned it will come off!

I was supplementing my dh at that age. And I was taking them myself. That could be an option to make sure you aren't low on nutrients.

Here is what helped me loose the 50 lbs I gaiined with dd. I widh I could do it now, but the dVD player has broken. I guess I will have to wait till we get a new one. This worout video works so well. Just thought I would share:

That video actually looks really good. Unfortunately, I can't use workout videos I can't make myself stick to them. I have to be accountable to someone...lol, like my DS for our walks. (He must have outside time or he's impossible to live with.) I used to take ashtanga yoga and kickboxing classes, and did a 9 week boot camp through the same health club. OH! Was it fun! But unless I've paid through the nose for a membership and have someone expecting me to be there...I won't do it. Bad bad me. lol

Can you believe I haven't tried to supplement DS with anything at all, not even CLO? I think I need to search threads on here and get some info to get started. Shame on me again!

Not to be pushy, but if you have to workout, that dvd has a different workout every day and a 12 week program to total transformation. I stop workout videos since I get bored of the same worout, but this one is differnt. and the 12 week goal is motivating.

I wish I werent in the boonies; I would love to take a class where I have to be accountable. I need to get into shape!

Here is a good thread about kids supplements that is active right now:
