Mercury retrograde questions

Okay, I'm really new to this, but I have had some "bumps" in my life lately, mostly centered around communication. I was talking about this with someone and she said, "Well, what do you expect? Mercury is in retrograde."

Can someone enlighten me as to what this means, and what I should (or shouldn't do) when Mercury is in retrograde?

Also, doesn't the mischief caused by Mercury retrograde start a week or two before the actual retrograde occurs?

YES! i sent you Sept i am also going to forward you Aug!!! it has a start up (a few weeks before) and a cool down (a few weeks after). we all feel it diff. i am going to shoot you over aug too. it talks about it!
