Induction via "gels"....

My mw is suggesting this as an option if induction becomes necessary. She said they are hormone gels... and they are an outpatient procedure at the hospital... that you do in three steps...

Anyway... ever heard of a labor induced by these?

Thanks!

I'm mostly a lurker to not only this DDC, but MDC generally. I just wanted to mention that "gels" are prostaglandin gels that mostly "ripen" the cervix. They "induce" labor in some relatively small percent of women. They are a by product of pig semen and are not any more effective than sex (thereby using REAL HUMAN semen).

I had 14 treatments with my first DD in 2007 and they did nothing for me, though, in the grand scheme of things, they are lower on the intervention scale (outside of all the vaginal entry--there is a pre-exam and then they insert the gels, so two chances to introduce "stuff" into your vagina during each treatment). It's often recommended that the gels be done twice a day.

My gel treatments were the first in a series of failed induction steps that led to an unnecessary c-section, so I would not take this decision lightly. If the gels don't work, the "next step" is often the use of Cervadil or Cytotek (which should be refused under any circumstances).

I would ask: How many treatments are you recommending? Should I just have a lot of sex? What if the treatments don't "work"? What if I do nothing?

If you aren't at least 42 weeks, I would avoid all induction, unless you have some intervening medical condition.

when they were talking about AROM for me - a bunch of ladies suggested that as a less definitive induction method. I liked the idea bc then it didn't necessarily 'start the clock', yk? Once your water is broken, you MUST have a baby, yk?

Good luck with your decision.

If I were you I would try putting a few capsules of evening primose oil near your cervix overnight(seems less yucky than the stuff they give at the hospital) It is a natural cervical ripener, I did this the day before my due date and had my baby in arms 24 hours later. But ya know I am not saying it will happen for everyone like this your body and baby need to be ready. So good luck to you.

*Just FYI if anyone ever mentions misoprostol as a great way to start labor, run the other way. It is NOT approved by the FDA for laboring women and is dangerous yet many providers still use it.

I would try all the other prostaglandin stuff first (sex, EPO) before using one of those gels...especially since hearing they are made with pig semen. However, if induction is necessary it does seem like this is a better way to go than pitocin etc.

Good luck,
Erin
