huggies or pampers--which are better at leaks

Thread Starter
I looked at the diapering forum for this post, but it seems to focus on cloth and other non disposable alternatives, so thought it best to post my question here.

I have a 4 month old son. We have been using Pampers, but he is soon to reach the 15 pound mark and we'll need to size up.

I haven't tried huggies, but am wondering which is better at preventing leaks?

There have been a few occasions where he's leaked out the side apparently, so not sure if that is common to all diapers.

hi linda, it really depends on his dimensions. for cloth & disposable diapers, some brands fit some babies & other brands fit other babies. we tried all the non-gel green disposables w/DD at first & only pampers fit her thighs & didn't leak. maybe try the size up in each brand you want to consider (buy a package or just ask someone using 'em for 1 or 2) and experiment.

Our Diapering forum is for all diapering questions, so I am going to move this over there.

With my dd, we preferred pampers, the huggies we were given leaked every time. HOWEVER... the cloth diapers we did with DS did *much* better at keeping in poo leaks, which imo is way more important than keeping in pee leaks (with him we used seventh generation sposies, and occasionally pampers, too - neither even compared for keeping in the poo, but were better for pee). For what that's worth.

It depends on the shape of your baby. But for us, Pampers worked better for both dd and ds.

I like Huggies better b/c they don't seem to get as soggy as Pampers seem to get. However, on my first child, I preferred Pampers b/c they seemed to fit her better. Huggies seems to have better sales and coupons out so I usually end up with those when I buy disposables.

When we did disposables, I preferred Pampers. It does just depend on the kid

For both kids, Pampers worked way better for us than Huggies. Huggies always seemed to leak, no matter what size and what shape my kids were at the time (both were skinny preemies who chunked up, and then my son slimmed down).

I have Huggies coupons and a big bag of Huggies size 3s that DD fits in that I am giving away at my bf'ing support group tomorrow because I don't want anymore blowouts! And I'm switching to cloth, but not because I don't love my Pampers.

Pampers always worked better when we used disposables. The couple times we used Huggies we had more leaks.

With ds1 (part time cd), I found it very important to make sure all the gussets were in the right place, the "ruffles" on the legs had to be out and all the "paper" had to be laying flat under the tabs, not folded under at all. That helped contain pee leaks.
For night, the ONLY thing that didn't leak was pullup type diapers. At that point there was one brand that fit smaller kids than 2t.

ftr, I preferred Huggies, but I'm not sure why- it's been over 3 years.
For poo leaks, who knows. lol. That's definitely a downfall of sposies.

I used Pampers (and loved them) up until a couple of years ago. They're making them less absorbent than they used to, so DD would leak every. single. night.

We've tried Luvs (hate em) and Huggies, and the Huggies are the preferred brand for now.

I prefer huggies for sposies over pampers. However, for daytime use Luvs or Whitecloud from Walmart worked fine.

I find it interesting the variation. It really must have something to do with fit on the child. With ds every. single. time. he pooped in pampers it went up his back & sometimes out the legs. I used less than half a package & then gave the rest away because I was changing his entire outfit soooo often. Huggies I didn't have a problem with.

Yup depends on baby build I prefered huggies over pampers and actually liked luvs the best for leak controll... Barney I could have done without

Another vote for Luvs here. We only used sposies for the first month, but they were my choice - didn't seem to stink quite as badly as pampers, and were/are WAY cheaper.. Also used them for DS1 for about a month or so when he as 3-4 months old when DH was in the hospital, and I loved them then too

I have found Luvs to work just as well as Pampers, and Pampers is generally my diaper of choice.

My sister and sister in law swear by Huggies.

Get a small pack of each and see which you prefer.

Depends on the kid.

My first two did better in Pampers and leaked out of Huggies/Kirkland (which I think are Huggies with the Costco brand on them?) like crazy.

My third leaked out of Pampers like crazy and almost never leaks out of the Kirkland brand dipes. She's got chunkier thighs and more booty than my first two .

I just noticed this- I was going to suggest that you try the next size up (as long as you'll be able to get a snug fit). That could help with the leaks. Bigger size=more absorbency.

I bought size 3 of Earth's Best (16-28lbs) sposies for my 3 month old, and they work fine at night. And he's a side sleeper usually. He weighs 14-15lbs, but the size 2 pampers were getting small, and we use so few sposies that he'd definitely have outgrown them before we used them all.

With DS1, only Pampers worked. He had a cute round belly and chunky arms, but thin legs.

For DD and the twins, Huggies or Kirkland seem to work the best. They all have chunky legs.

When we used disposibles, Huggies worked a lot better for DS. We also seemed to get leaks when we used Pampers. But, for my sister's son, she prefers Pampers because she gets leaks with Huggies. A lot of it depends on the baby wearing them.
