Why do people write God this way? just curious

I believe (and I'm sure that someone who knows more will chime in) that in Judaism it is prohibited to deface the name of G-d, so by putting the hypen in the middle it means that no one will be able to deface G-d's name after it has been written down.

That's my understanding anyway, but then I'm not Jewish and this is just what I've read.

We try not to throw out His name, nor to erase it. By not writing out His name in full, we eliminate this problem (let's say a post got deleted, though it's very unclear if typing is similar to actual writing on material), but it can't hurt, can it?
