We took over 500 pictures and at least 4 hours of video of my birth so this gallery is just a really small sample of what we got: Cavan's Birth

documenting child birth, photography project

I am currently in my final year studying photography at a BA level. For one of my final projects I am very interested in documenting, through images, the late stages of pregnancy and the birth itself. I am aware that this is a very delicate and special subject area and therefore understand how this would not be for everyone.

I am not looking to create a set of images that tries to make everything beautiful and glamorous. Rather, I would like to show the highs and lows, the truth behind childbirth.

I would be happy to discuss any of the above with anyone. It is possible for the images to remain anonymous if that should be required. All images would be passed on to the subject after the project as well as final prints. Please bear in mind however, that the images will not be the standard studio style of photography, much more of a documentary style. I can elaborate more on this if you are interested.

I am situated in London and would be looking at carrying out the images in the next few months.

Please don’t hesitate to get in contact.

Thanks,

Ed.

Our first homebirth

Here is our homebirth back from Feb 2007. It was amazing & so hard at the same time. There are a couple of "graphic" shots...some boob & whatnot.

here's a link to our album on facebook with my son river's birth photos.

my advice: RECORD IT!! even if you'll keep it hidden away so no one can see it, YOU will want to see it. i wasn't sure if i wanted to record river's birth but i am so glad i did. every time i see it, it makes my cry. it's a precious thing you'll keep forever.

here's our birth video if you're interested! watching home birth videos before i had him always encouraged me and reminded me i was making the very best decision to have him at home.

My mom got a bunch of "head shots" while I was giving birth to my little girl. I wish I had more of the actual labor shots, cause I really only have 2 (which are of me pushing squatting being supported by my boyfriend- really nice pictures), but I wish I had gotten more of the labor itself. I think the reason why I didn't is that for most of my pregnancy I was very resistant to having my picture taken, and my mom probably thought that I wouldn't want these pictures (and I probably didn't at the time). I kinda regret that, because I love looking at the pictures. It's only been 2 months, and I must have looked at them a million times. My advice would be to have someone you completely trust just have free reign to take digital pictures in a non-obtrusive way. That way you will get the ones you want, even if you have to sift through a bunch to find them.
