40 week OB appt this morning

I had planned on bringing one of my doulas with me to the appt for support, because there were three things I DID NOT want to discuss with the dr: 1. How "big" the baby is. 2. Cervical check. 3. Induction. But, with my history of delivering LGA babies in my 38th week, I anticipated an argument about at least one of those three.

My doula couldn't make it, there were some logistical issues, so I braved the appt on my own.

Turns out my biggest argument was with the nurse! She was really pushing for the cervical check, I politely declined over and over. Then my first BP reading was slightly elevated (132/84) and she said "uh oh! Well, we'll check it again in a few minutes" then goes on still trying to convince me why it's a good idea to get a cervica check, and that maybe the dr can "get things started" by checking me. SIGH. Next BP check was 124/82, which she said "is still elevated compared to your other readings!!"

No kidding lady...could it be because I'm more pregnant than I've ever been before, AND you're harassing me????

So she leaves, dr comes in, hardly mentions a thing about anything (this is the dr I like less, and one reason is because he's very short on words, not one to strike up a conversation with). He did ask when my others were born, but didn't say a thing about this one going later. He asked how long my labors were, and reminded me to call a little sooner this time so we are sure to make it (my last was only 2 hours of active labor).

Then he said something that made me laugh outloud...he said "you're not really that big, and from behind you don't look pregnant at all." Right...because I've gained 44 pounds and it's ALL in my belly, doc! My 40 week picture is on my blog www.blockboys.blogspot.com and you can see how "not really that big" I look I think it was his attempt at striking up conversation, like I said, it's really awkward with him because he's just not a chatty guy.

Anyway...I'm crampy and cranky today. Like really cranky. My husband started the morning off on a bad note, but I won't go into details, suffice to say he's on my poop list today. I wish these cramps would either go away or turn into something. I feel like I'm about to start my period with low deep crampy feelings and aches in my hips and thighs. I also woke up really gassy this morning. The end of pregnancy is SO much fun.

I'm with you on the low crampy feeling and aching thighs/hips. Hoping that it means we are at the finish line.

Glad that your appointment went fairly well. That nurse deserves a boot to the head. (reminds me of the one that yelled at me with dd for putting my pee in the wrong lab then took my bp and wondered why it was elevated).

Hoping your pains turn into something soon!

Do you always have the same nurse? What a maroon! And a virtual bonk on the head to your DH for whatever he did!

My dp is on my crap list too so I feel you on that. Good for you for sticking to your guns with the nurse though - it makes me sick how many people fall for the alarmist thing when docs and nurses push that stuff. So easily and quickly how that cascade can start...

Hang in there, this is such a hard time isn't it?

That feeling like your period is about to start is how I always feel in the day or two before I give birth.

fingers crossed that you go any minute! I can't believe you've made it this long. I totally thought you were on my heals. There was even a time I thought you might go before me !!!!

Well, darn you are good. I saw my mw this morning and totally asked to be checked. Being a FTM and after 2 nights now of strong ctx (yes again last night with a fizzle this morn), I was really curious if I was just imagining all this or if i was making marked progress. And by golly, I would say I am making progress alright. I am 4 cm and baby is at 0 station. So at least these night of sleeplessness and ctx are doing something. She was actually a little shocked b/c she says she does not usually see first timers this dilated before real labor begins. Anyway, I have those low crampies too, like a period and maybe I should be paying more attention to the time between them. I definately have a lot of show since the exam, to be expected with a friable cervix. Goodness, it would be nice to get the show on the road here! I am SURE you feel the same way. Maybe we will both go tonight!

No, this was a nurse I didn't recognize. The nurses are usually okay, although I've been asked at every appt for the last 4 weeks if I want a cervical check, and I always say no, and I often get a look of confusion. This nurse was by far the most pushy.

YES, this is a really hard time!! I thought going to 38 weeks was hard since my body starts pre-labor so early, so to go to 40 weeks is TORTURE!!

I know!!! HOW am I still pregnant??? My cycles are longer, which means I should be a mom who delivers past her due date, but since Ian and Connor were both early, and so big, I just resigned myself to the fact that I birth big babies a little early. So this one I was *fully* expecting to come early, too! And my body was doing everything it did the last two times, with all the pre-labor signs starting around week 34 or so, yet this time I'm still pregnant.

I'm glad you're making progress!!! I'm going to check myself tonight. I've been avoiding checking because earlier in the week i was feeling a little irritated and maybe yeasty. But I'm feeling better now. I also told my husband that one way or another, we're having sex tonight. I don't care if it's uncomfortable for BOTH of us!!
