Veggie dip

Thread Starter
DH and I have been working on eating fewer carbs (not to the extreme of "no carbs" but we eat a LOT of carbs and want to eat fewer). Last week I asked DH to pick up some veggie dip and I had carrots and celery and cucumbers from the farm, and as a side benefit they were a huge hit with DD as well.

Then I looked at the ingredients and nutrition info. Yuk. For one thing, there was NO protein - 0g - in the dip. Huh? It was a ranch veggie dip, I thought that would be a milk product.

So what better dips can I look at? I thought about yoghurt and that is a possibility, though it's really a different category of taste. Anything I can add to the yoghurt to make it more of a dip? Onions, I guess, what else?

Or did DH just pick up a crazy ranch dip that was probably diet or something?

I'm asking here instead of just looking at the labels because DH is going shopping for the week soon and I can't go with him. So I sort of have to tell him what to get. Yes, he can read a label, but it would probably be hard for him to make a decision without stressing out about it, and there's no reason for him to stress.

sour cream/crem fraiche with chives chopped throught it, hummus or mix some mayo (preferably homemade) with a little tomato past, lemon or vinegar, tabasco, worcestershire sauce...yum!

If you like garlic, I really like plain yogurt mixed with chopped garlic. You could add a bit of dill to it also. Or a tzatziki type of dip, with yogurt, finely chopped cucumbers and dill. Hummus would be great also - again I'm a garlic lover so I always put more of that.

I use plain greek yogurt for dips. It's so thick and tasty and of course high in protein! Unlike plain non-greek yogurt which I don't like the taste of, the greek reminds me more of sour cream than yogurt. So I suggest that as a base. It's way "dippier" Then add whatever sounds good to you for flavor.

White bean aioli!

Just puree up some navy or canellini beans with a bit of olive oil and a LOT oif garlic (raw or roasted\) and maybe a bit of rosemary.

Take that ranch dip, and 1/2 cup of cottage cheese, and blend smooth with a stick blender. No taste difference, HUGE amount of protein.

My absolute fav dip is mayo with curry or garam masala mixed in to taste (mine is usually a darker yellow color). A restaurant I used to go to as a child had this dip for their veggies and it was so yummy. Now, I make this dip whenever we have a veggie tray and you would be surprised the number of people who ask me for the recipe. This also works with the lower fat mayos. . .but it tastes best with the full fat stuff (doesn't everything)

I found this recipe I've been wanting to try for homemade ranch powder that you can just mix with sour cream. I haven't tried it yet, but the reviews look good and it's much better than that stuff you buy in the store.

I use a combo of sour cream & full fat plain yogurt mixed with Knorr veggie soup mix - always a hit, it's fabulous.

We just do sour cream with seasoning from the cupboard. We especially like garlic, onion and chili combined.

My favorite is:

1 chopped onion
1 large [16 oz I think?] package cottage cheese [fat free is fine or whole milk--whatever suits your wishes. I use low fat for adults, whole for kiddos.]
a couple of good-sized dollops of mayonnaise
dill--either 1/2 cup or so fresh, chopped small, or a couple of teaspoons dried
1-2 cloves of garlic, chopped small or pressed
a couple of dashes worcestershire sauce

If you like smooth dip, process in food processor or blender. We're okay with chunky here so I just throw it together.

This is really good--it sounds kind of weird but it isn't. It's much better after it chills for a couple of hours to let the garlic and onion flavors come out.
