Goat Milk vs Cow Milk

Thread Starter
Does anyone feed their child goat milk instead of cow milk? I have been reading that it is good for them and closer to breastmilk. I am slowly weaning my 14M old and he has been drinking organic cows milk with no problem. I am just looking for the healthiest thing for him to drink. Also, if I buy goat's milk, is organic better?

Thanks,
Stefani

If you are looking for the heathiest one, then for sure go with raw organic milk (I personally don't think it matters much if it's goat or cow milk as long as it's raw).

I plan on using goats milk with my son. I prefer it because it's healthier. I also have a dairy allergy and lactose intolerance so I'm hoping he'll at least be able to tolerate goats milk if he inherited my allergies or that by using that it will prevent the same allergies. Mine is so severe I can't even tolerate goats milk products. I thought I could, but after a couple weeks the same problems returned.

Goats milk is usually more easily digestible and there is less lactose in it. Cows milk tends to sit longer in a person because of what they are fed. But again, if it's raw organic they might be on the proper diet. I'm not too sure about that, I just know that there is much less lactose in it.

Some other options...

I give my 18mo daughter goat mild cheese for snacks instead of cow's because it is easier to digest and she loves it! , but for a milk substitute I give her hemp milk which my pediatrician suggested. It has so many good qualities that a growing child needs (protein, and omega 3's!) . You can buy it in any health food store or whole foods market, I like the Living Harvest brand (it comes in a box) But I really prefer to buy the hemp nut seeds and blend them myself into a smoothie with banana ( you can also add berries or any fruit). I do the same with chia seeds another great alternative that helps with brain developement and boosts their immunity. You can also mix chia seeds into oatmeal, soup, spaghetti, anything really! (and they dont' add a flavor)

Raw milk isn't legal in all states to buy or sell.

True. But drinking it from your own cow is legal. So, you can buy a share of a cow

Looks like it's legal in New Jersey, OP.

Goats milk is the most widely consumed milk in the world! It is yummy! We have our first dairy goats and are super excited to drink it, cook with it, sell it, make soap/lotions/shampoo, etc!!

Organic raw (or at least un-homogenized) milk comes first in the decision for us. After that, we go for the goat over cow if it is available.
I would definitely stay away from milk of any kind that is homogenized and pasteurized... especially ultra-pasteurized as so many seem to be these days.

My son (2 yo) is on raw goat milk and it's working really well. Nurse as long as you possibly can but at whatever point that isn't possible, raw goat milk is at least a decent option (a whole lot better than most other options).
