Retained placenta fragments- herbs?

I had my baby a week ago!

A couple of minutes after he came out, I was bleeding some in the birth pool. I looked at the amount and was not concerned, as it didn't seem to be getting any worse- just as if a gush had happened and then stopped.

I waited for the placenta to come out- 20 minutes? half an hour? I don't know, time doesn't behave normally in birth. But it wasn't too long. When it came out, a palm-sized clot and a palm-sized piece of broken off placenta came out at the same time. So clearly that was the cause of my bleeding.

DH and I both noticed that this placenta was smaller than the one from my second birth. Later when I looked at it more closely, I was able to see where the broken off chunk had been, but the whole thing seemed kind of fragile! You know how it should feel smooth and plump, kind of like a piece of boneless chicken? The maternal side of it felt sort of shredded, like if you were to cut that chicken against the grain. There were no other chunks out of it, but it was hard to tell if little bits were missing. It almost felt like it wanted to fall apart in my hands... I'm very grateful to it for growing my 8# 11 oz baby, and not failing us before the end.

My bleeding has not been excessive, in fact it's lighter than after my previous births. No big clots, and some days I have almost no bleeding at all (like today). BUT, on day 5 and also this morning, a thumb-sized clot came out with some little bit of tissue attached. One looked like membrane, one, uh, something else? So obviously there were/are some fragments left behind.

I have no symptoms of retained placenta; I feel fantastic. You can imagine how much I do not want to go in and get an ultrasound unless I'm having an issue... Are there herb tinctures I could take just in case, that will help expel anything else that might be in there?

It really doesn't sound as if you need anything to 'help'--your body has done, and is doing, it's job of cleaning out the uterus and returning everything to normal. If you start to feel worse, having a bout of stronger-than-usual afterpains, maybe a bit fevered, foul odor in the lochia or a constant ache in your uterus, then those can be signs of something trying to come out. In that case, I've found that drinking ginger tea can help--2-3 cups a day for a day or 2.

That's dried ginger powder in water just off the boil, steep covered for 10 or more minutes. It need only be as strong as you can comfortably drink--ginger is a hot spice and people's tolerance varies--I usually suggest starting with a pint of water and 1/8tsp ginger. If it's too spicy, add more water, if it doesn't bite your tongue at all, add a bit more ginger. The 'right amt' of ginger varies with people's tolerance for it. Ginger is an amazing spice with many healing effects on the body--in this case, it will act to prompt some contrax and a bit more bleeding (to help carry out any retained bits), and also as a mild tonic and blood cleanser to fight early infection.

If you use ginger, a day or 2 should do it. If you don't see relief in that time (and it usually works as needed that fast), it's time to try other things--with any signs of inflammation/infection, you don't want to let it go too long.

But again--I really think from what you've said that you are not in need of help. It is not that unusual to pass some clots in the first 2wks pp; what you describe does not sound alarming to me.

Thank you, that's so helpful! Really that has been my gut feeling too- that I am fine, and if there's anything else, it will come out just like it has been. I have no odor, no fever, no pain anywhere.

Our family doctor saw the baby a couple of days ago and asked me about the birth. I mentioned that the placenta hadn't been intact, and her eyes got wide. She was telling me I shouldn't wait, I'd get a terrible infection that I wouldn't know about until it was too late, I'd hemmorhage, etc. I like her so much, but I accept that she tends to be nervous about a lot of things right off the bat, and I'm just not- "wait and see" is my middle name. But she scared DH, so I posted to see about alternatives. Thanks again, I appreciate it!

Aaaaahh. I see! Yeah, well just having a retained membrane/placental piece does not mean it can't come out. Most do--sometimes it takes some days, but when they don't there is *always* some issue for mom.

I've heard that some women with retained stuff don't get signs of infection or any pain, but instead have markedly reduced milk supply. In one story I heard from an IBCLC (in a workshop re slow baby weight gain), mom carried the retained plac. chunk for a month, while trying everything, unsuccessfully, to make enough milk. IBCLC guessed it was placenta fragment, and once mom insisted on some methergine to clean her uterus out, her supply increased. Apparently, in unusual cases, retained placenta still emits enough pregnancy hormones to interfere with milk supply--? Or so the IBCLC said.

Anyway, if you feel fine, and your milk supply is good, then I think you can trust that.
