how do I know if I have oversupply?

Ok, I feel sort of dumb that I have to ask this, but how do I know if I have oversupply? I've read lots of posts and things talking about block feeding, about babies being gassy or having green poo, etc. How do I know if that's the issue?

Sometimes I wonder if baby has a food intolerance (ds1 and I both have food allergies), but after reading some of the above things, I wonder if it could be from oversupply or a milk imbalance, so fill me in. I partly wonder, too, because often when ds2 eats (he is 6 wk, btw), he wants to eat but then chokes and coughs, comes off sputtering and crying, but desperately latches on again only to do the same. I wonder if it's just coming too fast for him.

I do leak a lot at night, not during the day. I am sometimes bursting at the seams come morning, even though he only tends to go about 3 hour stretches. He generally goes 3 hours both day and night, but at night doesn't tend to nurse that well because he falls back to sleep. He usually only nurses for about 5 minutes per side because he gulps pretty fast. Spits up sometimes, but not huge amounts.

During the day, particularly in the evening, baby occas. has crying episodes where he arches his back and just seems uncomfortable. Don't know if I should blame this on something or if it's just normal.

His poos are runny, seedy, and vary between mustard color and slightly greenish.

Educate me, please??!! And, if I do have oversupply or imbalance, what do I do to help?

It sounds normal 2 me - am not an expert.
My friend who had oversupply soaked clothes, sheets, etc. with leaking.

I found this helpful when I was trying to figure it out myself. It sounds like a possibility given what you said. If you are only nursing for five minutes on one side before you switch to the other side, your baby may not be getting enough hindmilk--which can cause oversupply and oversupply related symptoms.

I'd try to get him back on the same side again after the 5 min. Get him up, put your shirt down, maybe burp, then back on the same side and see if he'll do another 5 min there.

The greenish poop is enough for me to advise you to try that.

Alternatively, you can try getting him to start on the same side you ended on before... and keeping that pattern going to see if it gets rid of the greenish poo.

Milk coming too fast is overactive letdown. If milk is pouring out, you might try letting it spray into a towel or burp cloth for a little bit so it isn't so overwhelming for him. It may also help him to get more hindmilk.

That is what I did with Ds until he was 3 when he weaned! Also mu letdown sometimes made him choke I am not to sure if that was because of oversupply or not.

That LLL link was so helpful! I"m going to try nursing just on one side at each feeding and see what happens, rather than always nursing on both sides. Then we'll go from there.
