Well, no studies, but it's a logical conclusion. Considering the amount of sex offenders, and given how many sex crimes are committed when it comes to children, it stands to reason that it's hard to spot MOST sex offenders.

If they all looked weird and creepy, the amount of sex crimes wouldn't be so high. Everyone would know what to watch for.

Moreover, if you're a criminal, you don't want to be caught. So, it's not in your best interest to look weird and creepy. And considering a lot of sex offenders are repeat offenders ... they obviously gain repeated access to children. And it's probably not by being weird and creepy, while rousing the suspicion of adults.

Now, I'm sure there is a small number of them who can't blend in. And maybe this guy was one of them. Maybe not. We'll never know. But, either way, after living for so long in America, I'm on the side of the OP - it's always better to be safe than sorry, especially when it comes to children.

Yes, because most cases of children being molested are perpetrated by a relative or acquaintance, someone you would find "normal".

Gosh, our local database has photographs of the registered offenders and I've been looking through them and while I'm sure these men looks "normal" to their relatives and acquaintances, they look totally scary to me and I know it isn't just because I know what they've done. Not one of them looks like the "dad next door."

Anyway, thank you for the support that's been shown here. I still feel pretty vulnerable after this experience but I trust now that I did everything I could have in the situation and I know to be more cautious in the future
