So I'm trying to help a friend (and fellow mdc momma!) build a newborn stash. So tell me what your ideal stash would be for a newborn. Here's mine... or what I had with my ds

24 GMD orange edge
24 GMD yellow edge
7 KL0's
3 xsmall thirsties fab fitteds
2 ME Sandies

4 BGOS
3 small Fuzzi Bunz

2 xsmall proraps
2 small proraps
1 xsmall bsww
1 xsmall bummis super brite
2 small bummis super brite
2 xsmall thirsties covers
4 small thirsties covers

3 snappis
2 wet bags (1 big and 1 small)
40 wipes

Hey! Thanks Carhootel!

I have 30 GMD orange-edge prefolds, 18 Kissaluvs 0, 6 newborn BSWW and 6 Blue Penguin wrap 'n snaps. Plus pins, Snappis, wipes, etc. It looks pretty good to me.

I think it's nice to be able to afford special newborn diapers. It's not really cost effective, but it's nice.

Threads like this make me just want to use sposies for our next as a newborn. We didn't start cloth until my DD was 8 mo., so we never had to mess with the newborn thing. That's just sooo many diapers and stuff to buy for such a short time! Even though I know it would be better, I don't know if I could justify that much money and effort for just a month or two of use.

It does seem like a lot but that stash at the top got me through the first 4 months and through the 'going through tons of diapers' phase. When I bought mediums between 4-5months I bought SO many less diapers. I also NEVER ran out during those first few weeks and I feel like I would have been spending a ton on disposables considering the amount I went through. Not to say my ds pooped every 5 minutes or anything

ETA: some links to other threads here that have good info about an ideal newborn stash

If you're using prefolds, it's really not that much, since tiny prefolds make excellent doublers and even wipes.

I used sposies for a month and a half.
My stash was 24 Gro baby inserts and 8 shells. I now have 9 shells and that has created 25 inserts and 10 or 11 boosters.

I plan on having 24 newborn and 24 infant prefolds with 8 shells for my next baby. He didn't fit his gro baby diapers until he was almost 2 months.

I think your numbers are VERY high.

Newborns go through about 10 diapers a day. If you are happy to wash daily, you need 20... We got through the newborn phase with 20 cheap fitted snap diapers and 6 emergency prefolds. I'd throw that day's diapers on after supper and then in the drier before bed. This time I want more, but no more than 30 total. I'm can't stand when the diaper pail sits for more than a day or two at most.

And covers! We had 3! 3 small Motherease Rekki wraps. The were "big" for a newborn but the velcro made them totally work. I want 2 more.

I really don't get the point in having a mix of AIOs and other diapers. If you're going to do covers and then diapers - stick with that.

I know women who do their kids with 20 flats, 2 snappis and ~3 covers. Cloth diapers don't have to be expensive.

I have 24 NB/infant prefolds 2 NB fitted diapers and 7 NB/small covers
Then I'm going to MEOS and sandy diapers.
I also have a one size pocket diaper (plan to eventually add three more)
20 wipes (plan to add another dozen)
2 small wet bags
(need to get my pail and 2 pail liners)

I'll be doing prefolds at first and sumplementing with some sposies then going from those to MEOS. I did all sposies with my first and we spent a fourtune in disposables just in the 2.5 months before going to cloth.

We easily went through twice that and that was with sposies. My DD was a pooping machine Saying that though I agree with keeping the NB stash simple were just doing prefolds only 12 which I bought the other dozen are birds eye prefolds I bought to use a doublers with my oldest as a toddler but heck they will work. I do have a decent array of covers but I'll admit to liking having a decent amount of covers I think 4 are true NB size the others will go longer into a true size small. Plus then I can "permently" stick one in DH and I diaper bags.
My SIL though diapered All 5 of her kids with the same 4 dozen flat fold diapers and set of gerber covers and pins They all wore a disposable at night but even so...

I'm expecting my third baby and I'm doing the newborn thing totally different this time. For baby 1, I used infant-sized and he just wore huge diapers. For baby 2, I used sposies until she fit the size smalls and she leaked poop onto every possible surface in my home and made a pile of stinky garbage that was a real hassle to deal with.

This time, I'm going for nb prefolds. I'll use multi-size wraps that can be adjusted to fit newborn and small, and some gerber nb pull-on pants.

JL83: Notice I was talking about the ideal newborn stash. You can buy a package of 36 flats and 6 Dappi nylon pants for $65, diapers from birth to potty training (and they're really nice flats, too) and the pants you'd have to replace in the next size up but that would only cost like $10 each time. Totally workable, just not my ideal. My ideal is prefolds or fitteds with wrap-style covers, so that's what I'm saying. Also, I prefer to wash every 2 days rather than every day.

What I know is that I was almost turned entirely off cloth diapers because of the lists I kept seeing online about how many diapers I should buy.

I think that with newborns, less is better because they grow out of them so fast.

If I had to do it over I'd get:
12 preemie PFs
24 Orange edge PFs
6 itty bitty AIOs (for diaper bag, exhaustion, grandma changing dipes, etc.)
4-5 itty bitty covers (like Bummis Super Brite or some preemie litewraps)

Once they outgrew those I'd get:
24 infant PFs which are super versatile, I can trifold them into a medium size cover or stuff medium pockets even now at 21 months
12 small or OS pockets (to be stuffed with the orange edge PFs)
and then eventually medium or more OS pockets, my tiny kid will almost certainly potty train out of his mediums, which he's been wearing since 5 months old.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother with fitteds but that's totally a personal choice. I find them a bit bulky on itty bitty babies and once you master the Snappi, PFs really hold poop in.

I am expecting my second child and am due in March. With my first I used disposables but am now considering cloth. I have lots to learn and have been reading as much as I can. I also went to a little workshop just to learn about all the choices out there. Reading your messages, I got already few questions, so can anyone explain to me what exactly an Orange edge is?. As I read the ideal list, I am too overwhelmed by the amount of diapers for a newborn, and completely puzzled by all the abreaviations. Seems like I am reading a list of lab test results or something. Sorry...
Thanks. Be well

Green Mountain Diapers (GMD) makes prefolds in different sizes than most, the orange edge are more absorbant and wider than preemie sized but short enough to fit well on a newborn.

With standard sizing alot of babies outgrow preemie sized (if they ever fit in them) before they're really big enough for infant sized which leads to a really bulky diaper (which doesn't bother some people but makes me nuts)

In addition to selling the orange edge, GMD also has a ton of good basic info.

This is what I have so far:
3 dozen infant size prefolds for cotton babies they fit (newborn - 15lbs)
1/2 dozen newborn prowraps (up to 10lbs) got these off diaperswapper and they were really cheap so I don't mind if they only fit for a few week. I'll just put them up for the next baby.
2 snappis

To complete my stash I need:
another 1/2 dozen small prowraps
1/2 dozen newborn and small dappis
Going to make 3 dozen wipes
couple pair of pins and 2 more snappis
1 small wet bag for travel

I'm not sure if my current diaper pail will hold my toddler's and my newborn's diapers so I will wait and see if I need another one. I plan on washing daily so we shall see.

Ny NB stash (all used except PFs, which are 2nd quality):

24 Infant LL PFs ($26)
12 S Fitteds ($20)
6 KL 0's (my splurge, $45)

1 S Imse Vimse Wool ($14)
2 S Bummis Polar fleece ($16)
2 S Bummis Superbrite ($12)
6 S BSWW/Dappis ($12)
2 NB Prowraps ($8)

Total $153

I'm hoping since I'm starting off in the 'Small' size (skipping the NB) that these will last me to 4 months or so. By my totally unscientific calculation, that would cost me atleast double ($300) if I were in sposies (at 10 sposies/day, $.25/diaper, 120 days).

If she's really concerned with cost, I would suggest your friend check out Diaperswappers for used covers and shop the clearance PFs.
