Alternatives to pots for growing veggies?

We're moving house and the new place has a small garden but a biggish deck and gravel area. I've been given permission to make a veggie garden in the backyard but there's very little room and not much sun. Sooo, I was thinking pots... except pots are expensive and hard to find in big enough sizes to grow decent veggies. Plus, I don't really like the look of a whole conglomeration of pots; I tend to think they look messy.

So does anyone have any ideas for veggie-holding containers that are a) attractive, b) cheap, c) large enough to grow carrots, tomatoes and so on in comfortably, and b) drainage-friendly?

As much as I'd like to have everything in artistic wooden half-casks and trugs, it's way out of budget. Any ideas?

Something I just heard of today...
Got a few local tree nurseries around?
Apparently one really close to me sells their old/empty pots - like ones big enough that you could take a bath in. For a whopping $2/pop. I shall be calling them this week to gear up for next year. If you can find something similar that may work. I think just lining them up all neat and pretty would be okay, unlike some friends that just stuffed as many pots as possible where they could - it looks a bit... cluttered at their place. Plus, if you felt like getting creative with the kiddo you could always paint or do something else to the outside of them as well.

I saw an article about rooftop gardening that had plastic storage bins as planters, with holes in the bottom for drainage.

You can get damged (haveleaks or something) glavanized watering troughs for pretty cheap and they work great, you just need to drill holes, I'm about to use some to contain some bamboo and increase my privacy from my neighbors. Also, my partner and I are expermineting with use using "smart pots" which are reusable collapsible pots that increase root health and growth.

I use 5 gallon paint buckets from Home Depot at just under $3 a pop. I've had amazing success. And this year we are looking into making several hypertufa troughs for herbs & greens.
