What carrier do you like for different activities/ages?

I know a lot of people have multiple carriers.. I was just wondering which carrier you prefer for different activities and ages..
These are the carriers I am most interested in:
Stretchy Wrap:
Woven Wrap:
Ring Sling:
Mei Tai:
SSC:

Would it be silly or excessive to have one of each of these? (I already have 2 of the 5.)

Stretchy Wrap:
Never. I've been wearing my chunky monkey from the first week on, and never needed a stretchy wrap.

Woven Wrap:
Always! Well, almost always. I've been using woven wraps since about 5 or six weeks, and my 37 lb. 2.5 year old still loves being in there, and I am most comfortable wearing him in wraps. They are really super duper fabulous at distributing the weight evenly.

Ring Sling:
VERY occasionally. I really prefer 2-shoulder carriers. My chunky monkey grew FAST, and by 3 months/18lbs or so, I couldn't carry him one-shouldered for very long at all.

Mei Tai:
Sometimes. This is a daddy carrier mostly in our house. It is nice as an easy to learn 2-shouldered back or front carrier with good weight distribution.

SSC:
Sometimes. This is also mostly a daddy carrier here. Very easy to use, no straps dragging when my son is out walking. Great of lots of ups and downs in dirty places (such as the county fair). Good weight distribution - especially to hips.

If you are looking for a single carrier, I'd go for a woven wrap as they can do just about anything. If you're looking for 2, I'd go for a wrap and a mei tai or SSC. If you want to be enabled , I'd go for one of each in your favorite colors and fabrics to see what you like because they do all have their time and place.

I certainly don't think you need one or more of every kind of carrier out there -- if you find a carrier you love, it's OK to stick with just one.

It's also OK to realize that what works in the early months might not be as good later on, as baby's need and desire to be carried, or carried in a particular way, depends on age and stage, personality, etc. And your needs and preferences will change as baby becomes more active, as baby gets bigger and heavier, depending on your lifestyle, etc.

That said, I often analogize carriers to shoes -- different shoes fill different needs and activities, and it's the same with carriers. You don't need to have a closet-full of shoes like Imelda Marcos, but it's also nice to have a good comfy and supportive pair for walking/hiking, a dressier pair, sandals for when it's warm, etc.

A stretchy wrap is wonderful for the early months. If you have a newborn, I love a stretchy wrap for the newborn phase. I don't particularly care for a woven wrap in the newborn days, esp. if you're not familiar with using one yet, as it's harder IME to learn to wrap with. If your baby is already 4 months old (? -- as per your siggy) -- then I wouldn't bother.

A woven wrap can certainly be the most versatile of the carriers, but IME it also has the highest learning curve to a) really get it comfy and secure and b) learn all the different carries. I also don't like them as much for older, walking toddlers who want up-down all the time, as I don't like constantly tying and re-tying a wrap, esp. for a back carry.

I think the question of whether to get a woven wrap is very dependent on YOUR personality -- are you the kind of person who wants to take on a challenge and practice with a carrier that's got a higher learning curve, or do you want something that doesn't take as much practice? I think woven wraps are great for many people, but they're definitely not for everyone.

A ring sling is great for little babies for longer carries, or big babies/toddlers for shorter carries, IMO. A ring sling is very compact and easy to take along in a diaper bag for whatever babywearing need might occur. I really love the adjustability. I also like the tail as a built-in nursing cover/sunshade/weather shade. It takes a little practice but it's easy overall to learn.

My preference is for an unpadded or light padding in the shoulder only ring sling, with an open tail for adjustability. I don't care for big bulky padded slings or those with closed tails where you can't adjust the edges individually.

Mei tais -- I LOVE mei tais for front and back carries, especially for little babies. Learning the high back carry with my newborn in the Kozy changed my life. I also think they're more secure and hands-free than a ring sling, and easy to nurse in.

SSCs -- hands-down my favorite kind of carrier. I find them to be more ergonomic for me, easier and quicker to use than just about anything else, and nothing ever drags on the ground (unlike a wrap or mei tai straps). Once a baby gets big enough, I think they should mostly be carried on the back for ergonomic reasons, and I think a hip belt that transfers baby's weight to your hips enables you to carry a heavier baby longer than in just about any other kind of carrier. I think a well-fitting, comfortable buckle carrier is a good addition to anyone's carrier wardrobe, particularly for a) heavier babies, b) back carries, and c) that up-down stage where you want to be able to get them on and off very easily.

We use the ssc most of the time now in a back carry. Ds is a big boy (almost 27lbs) & I find front carries way too uncomfortable.

I always keep the ring sling handy - especially when going into the grocery store or some other place where I don't expect to be carrying him 'cause it's small & it's easy to quickly pop him into it for a short time. Dh actually still prefers the ring sling.

We also have a backpack carrier that doesn't get used a lot but I do like it for things like hiking or going to the library ('cause there is a place for the books).

Great info! Maybe I should explain my situation a little bit..
I have a 17lb, 3 month old.. I have been wearing him in a hug hold in my stretchy wrap. I like it and he likes it, but 1) It is a little too time consuming (its not that it takes that long, but I usually figure it adds just that much more time that I don't do it) for me to put it on and put him in it when I am running in a store, so I end up draggin my infant seat in, which is heavy! 2) After about an hour, my back starts to ache. Could be the hold I am doing?
I also have a ring sling.. I haven't used it more then a couple time. He hasn't liked it as well as the he likes being in the wrap. I have heard that as they get older, the ring sling is good for the hip hold for short trips?
So, now I am honestly thinking about getting either a MT or SSC or both. I just didn't know if I was getting too many options.
Also, I would have to order the SSC carry online (no stores that sell carriers here) and I read that they are hard to find the right fit? That concerns me not being able to try it before I buy it...

The mei tai is my go-to carrier, and if I were stranded on a desert island, I'd want to bring that one. But other carriers have worked their way into my life as well. I

started using the mei tai at birth, as both girls liked to be held upright. Around 10mos.

I started using a ring sling, as DDs were not quite ready for the back carry in the MT (they were terrified of being on my back, I know many mamas who get their newborns on their back, just not mine). The girls had more of a view than they would in a front carry in a MT. This continued to be my favorite carrier for quick trips, like to the grocery store, library, etc. The MT backcarry became my favorite for longer trips, like the zoo, the park, on a hike, I guess my more active carrier. The ring sling era ended when DD2 was sick and I wore her in the ring sling 16hrs a day for 3 days and ended up with 3-4 pinched nerves in my shoulder. Ouch. I still pull it out occasionally, but not more than once every two months or so.

I ended up slurging on a SSC which was my workhorse for a long time, easy on and off, good for the up-and-down toddler years. Now that DD2 is almost 4 and my babywearing years are dwindling down, I am becoming more of a "purist" and gravitating back to the plain-old MT.

I very much regret never getting the hang of wrapping. If I had a do-over, I'd start with the wrap...

It sounds like he's actually getting too heavy for the stretchy wrap. Dd was just about the same weight (older) as your ds when I got my SCC. I got a Two Mommas Designs buckle tai. It has been my life saver! I love it! One of the creators/makers is tiny (size 2) and the other is larger (size 18). Their carriers fit both beautifully. They can make longer straps if needed (for a 3X man) or customize it smaller. Just dialogue with them when ordering. All carriers are custom made, unless you happen to get an in-stock carrier.

I definitely think you should get another carrier. I used a stretch wrap until my LO was getting too heavy for it, then I mostly use a SSC. I also have a RS, but use that only for short carries because I find it uncomfortable after a while.

So I think you should get some type of carrier that is better for a bigger, heavier baby. Sounds like you're not as interested in a woven wrap, so you should probably look into a SSC or mei tai. I think you'll find times you'll want your RS too, but I just don't think it's going to be your main carrier is you have a 17 lbs baby!

Not at all! I have 3 different types that I have used on a regular basis, at different stages.

Stretchy Wrap: & Woven Wrap: Never did get the hang of it. I'm Wrap Challenged. I have tried them w/ a friend's help, though. It was nice for a tiny baby.

Ring Sling: Newborn up to about 20 lbs (4 mos, for my babies). Also, good for carrying a sleeping baby from the car to the house, regardless of age/size. Currently, I do this with my 2 yr old.

Mei Tai: Anytime

SSC: Anytime, especially enjoying it for back carries with toddler. Also find it handy for older kid (45 lb 8 yr old) who sprained an ankle.
