Feeding cats and dogs...

Together?

For those of you with both? How does feeding time go? Each eat at the same time but different parts of house? One after the other? How do you keep them from eating each others food? Are their dishes kept in the same spot? Do they share water dishes for one for cats; one for dogs?

Okay, I think 7 questions is a good start,

We have one big water dish for everyone. I found with multiples I wasn't good at making sure they were all full of clean water plus the cats liked to tip their little bowl & that was driving me nutty.

The cats are fed first on a raised surface (currently a window sill). Dogs love cat food so if it's not raised the dogs inevitably get into it. I feed the cats while the dogs are outside.

Then while the cats are eating & before letting the dogs in I get the dogs bowls filled. I let the dogs in who each eat on opposite sides of the kitchen (they have different food). We generally hang out in the kitchen until the dogs finish eating (or at least one of them is done & leaves the room) to make sure they keep to their own food.

All my animals are free fed. I know it's not a popular choice, but works for my crew. None are guarders, and none over eat. I have three dogs and a cat. Dogs eat on the floor, Cat eats on the dryer. I do have to be in the same room when I give the cat canned food, the second I step out, my Australian Kelpie eats it. She's quick. I just have one bowl of water.

They all drink out of a large water dish in the kitchen. The dogs are fed once a day. The cats free feed, and their dishes are on a shelf in our play room/ office that they jump up several pieces of furniture to get to. We've had a real problem in the past with dogs eating the cat food, but this has been the one solution that worked, plus on of my dogs lost some pudge! lol

Our cats eat kibble and our dogs eat raw so that's an easy one. The dog's get fed on a schedule and the cats get free fed. The cat dishes are in the bathroom and the dogs aren't allowed in there or they will eat all the food and get in the litterbox, ewww! I have a big waterbowl in the kitchen for the dogs that the cats sometimes drink from but they have their own too.

Here I'm thinking I'm doing something wrong by separating them at feeding time, lol, I guess its just the thing to do.
