skype?

Does anyone use Skype for their home phone? I live in NM and our landline choices are pretty limited. I am constantly aggitated by the amount I pay for my phone bill through Qwest. I was wondering what experience people had with just using SKype. We do not have a cell phone, so I am wanting to make sure it is reliable.

We had skype for awhile but didn't find it fantastic. We have now had voip (voice over ip) for the past 2 years as our primary phone & for 2 years before that as dh's workline. We are really happy with voip - if you don't have a reliable internet service it can make things a little annoying though.

On the same note: if you are using these services as your primary phone be sure to register your location. There has been incidences with 911 calls not being directed to the correct location. Someone died close to here recently 'cause their call went to somewhere in the states instead of their local 911 service.

We did, but we had mobiles for emergencies. At 911 they ask your address but that is a danger unless your mobile phone is registered to your physical address (ours is on our billing address...)

I am using skype from europe and out of 3 phone calls I made, 2 people couldn't hear me toward the end of the call. I used vonage before leaving the US and that was a ton better but kind of pricey. I've heard OK things about Magic Jack and they have a free trial. If I used Windows, I might try that.

Skype is pretty cheap, but hard to hear. I find there's a lot of echo on both ends. It drives my mom crazy when I call her on skype. It's getting on my nerves too. When we move, we won't be using it.

We don't use Skype for our actual phone line but do use it for overseas calls because it's so inexpensive. I find the quality to be just fine, we don't use it as often though. I make sure to sit close to my wireless router or use a network cable though, over wireless the network connection can be not stable enough.
