Liverwurst is my new fav food

I seriously feel like I'm getting addicted to it. The other night, I was perusing some TF blogs, and I read one that mentioned giving liverwurst to their DC. It reminded me of when I was a kid and my Gram would get liverwurst. I used to love it. Had no idea it was actual liver. Anyway, I bought some at WF last night and it was delish! Now, I feel like I can't get enough. About 5-6 times today I've craved it and had to spread some on Late July crackers. During each pregnancy, I've been severely anemic, but just borderline when not pregnant. I'm sure this will help.

Just had to share.

I can't believe you just posted this because I was about to post a question about boiled chicken livers....actually I will post the question but I'm excited to try to make liverworst myself. Have you thought about doing it?

I thought about making the liverwurst myself, but I wanted to try some "pre-made" to be sure that I still liked it. It's been at least 20+ years since I had some with my Gram, so I wasn't sure that my tastes hadn't changed. All it did was remind me of my Gram. I'll probably buy it a few more times before I make it myself. I also bought some pate with mushrooms that I want to try. I think I'll finish the liverwurst, first.

Does anyone know what else it is good with, besides crackers?

I grew up on liverwurst sandwiches when I was a kid too! My MIL recently had it at her house and I devoured it! Mmm

I love liverwurst, but I don't think I can get it around here that's not factory farmed livers... which, just... ew. So I don't have it very often.

It's pretty fun to make if you have a safe source of livers. It doesn't come out as creamy as store bought, but that might be because I use cloth casings instead of regular casings (mostly because I don't know where to get regular ones, but also because they kind of freak me out).

Oh man, I used the heck out of some liverwurst sandwiches as a kid!!!!!

yeah, casing totally gross me out!

Try this!

If you like country paté, liverwurst or braunschweiger, chances are you’ll enjoy this deliciously rich, easy-to-make spread..

I always prep my liver by soaking it in milk with a bit of lemon first. This makes ALL the difference for me. You can't taste the lemon, and together they give it a much better flavor with no after-taste.

Nom, nom, nom... love liver...

Oh, and livers are usually really cheap at the farmers' market because so few people buy them! We get organic, grass-finished beef livers for $2.25 lb at ours.

That sounds so good to me and I have never even had it. Perhaps I am needing some liver! I am going to try that pate recipe- looks nice and easy! I will make some nice nut crackers to spread it on- yum!!

I was the only kid in my school that ever ate liverwurst!!!! I love it US Wellness makes a very yummy liverwurst. My 3 year old eats it most days for lunch.

Most of my family loves liverwurst. As a toddler my dd would eat pieces of liverwurst and black bread, all the time! I grew up with liverwurst sandwiches with mustard, but now I enjoy it plain-almost like pate.

Probably a silly question, but does the liverwurst from US Wellness meats freeze well? I've been wanting to order some from them and was trying to figure out how much to get. Also wanted to try their braunsweiger.

I made a liverwurst pate today using that recipe posted and a bunch of other recipes to go off of- add this and that spice and it was totally yummy!!!!

I hope so 'cause it's on sale until the 10th and I just ordered 8 lbs (4 of each)! I have been wanting to try it so bad - all the ones I can find in the store have dairy and we don't dairy.

It freezes very well. We buy it in bulk and freeze all the time.

I was surprised to find 'dried nonfat milk powder' in the ingredient list of all three brands in the local hfs's! I love dairy, but not oxidized-cholesterol dairy!

I'll definitely have to stockpile some in the freezer. I'll bet it's been at least 15 years since I've had any liverwurst, but I remember loving it! One of many foods Mom used to buy just for Dad, even though she thought it was disgusting. Now that I think about it, my Dad grew up taking CLO, eating extra egg yolks, eating liver, etc. Maybe I need to ask my Grandma (his mom) for liver recipes!

I've never had liverwurst, do you think its something I would like if I hate liver? I really want to get some organ meats in my diet, but I have NEVER been able to stomach even the smell of liver. I keep wanting to try it, but am afraid to dole out the money for something I'll have to throw out. I keep thinking maybe since it's cold...
Any suggestions?

we ate it with/on granny smith apple slices, usually alternated with sharp cheese (on apple) when I was little

it's good on crunchy 'wheat thin'-type crackers, too

it's also yummy on toasted sourdough with tomato, lettuce and mustard

I talked to the US Wellness folks and they said I could cut the logs when they were semi frozen (pretty much how they arrived) into smaller sections and then freeze most of the sections (well sealed) and thaw one. That way I could thaw smaller bits at a time. We tend to go in cycles with eating (can't get enough for a week and then need a break) so we needed smaller portions. I was worried about thawing all the way and then re-freezing, but he suggested to cut it before it thawed all the way and then said that re-freezing would be fine.

YUM
