Anyone boiled liver before?

Tonight I put 2 pounds of chicken liver in chicken broth and it turned blood red. I'm a bit grossed out by it but if it's full of nutrients then I'll make soup out of it. Anyone eaten or heard of people eating cooked chicken blood?

The broth turned red? I boil my livers and have not had that happen, but not as many as you did so I don't really know. As for eating chicken blood, there are many cultures that eat blood. In Thailand (I think) they have a dish called "black chicken" that is chicken that was smothered instead of having its throat slit. This keeps all the blood in the meat. It apparently makes the meat spicy.

yeah, blood red. It's totally blood. The livers were from organic chickens (hopefully free-range)....I think I'll call the store to see if they were free-range.

Anyway, I'm looking to see if this is going to be nutrient dense and nourishing for my 2 year old and husband. Oh I wish I had a wise old great grandma to connect to.....guess the internet will have to do.

I dont know if I could handle eating it, but I do eat beef stew, is it much different? Liver in general is a bit gross to me, so I encapsulte it.

Blood is definitely nutrient dense. It's just not a food we are familiar with any longer. If you think the broth tastes good, I'd go for it.

Has it been boiled for a while and still red? I'm thinking it should turn brown after being boiled.

When I make my soups I toss the whole chicken in, liver, heart, etc. included and it always turns a bit brown. Well, then I mash the liver and add it so it really turns brown!

No, I didn't boil it for very long. The liver itself was cooked but the liquid was red. I'm going to give it a try....put in some garlic, sea salt and perhaps cilantro. Give it a taste and if it's gross then I'll put in some coconut milk as a last ditch effort to see if it's palatable. hee hee Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts!

Well....I ended up using the broth to make soup and it was awesome. My husband and toddler loved it. As it cooked more it turned brown. Boy am I glad I used it.

Good luck if anyone tries it.
